Regulations don't work so well if the corporations decide what to regulate. Profit is the only thing that matters. It's cheaper for them to pay fines or compensation than it is to provide safety measures. There's a much better way.

That's a silly way to define something. Here, I'll start. Capitalism is an economic system where the means of production is privately owned for the purpose of profit. Can you define socialism in one sentence?

Capitalism is where non workers (shareholders, investors etc) own the means of production and take the surplus value of workers in the form of profit. The workers are paid for labor but have no control over the profits. Under socialism workers have ownership AND control of the workplace (see any worker cooperative) Can you explain how socialism itself results in deaths? "body count" is an odd way to measure an economic system.

  25.  @Brusef  sometimes the definitions are confusing. For instance, private property refers to the means of production (factories, offices, equipment etc) whereas personal property means the things people own (phone, toothbrush, house, car etc)

  26.  @jmodified  I didn't say there was a law. Capitalism is just the dominant system and it's hostile to worker cooperatives. Hence they aren't as common. While not perfect they are far better for workers.

  27.  @jmodified  "countries" aren't capitalist. They have capitalism as the dominant economic system. e.g. the US is a constitutional republic with a mixed (but predominantly capitalist) economy.

  29. ​ @zenxel  I'm genuinely curious, where did you get your understanding of what socialism is? Why would the state need to control profit? Socialism can exist perfectly well within a market economy. If workers control the means of production, then the means of production becomes a democracy instead of a dictatorship.

  30. ​ @zenxel  Under capitalism non-workers (investors/shareholders) control and distribute profits.....that's the "private ownership" part (private meaning separate from the workers) At Amazon for instance, workers have no control. They can only sell their labor. If they company makes massive profits it's often distributed to shareholders (non workers) as dividends. The workers at Amazon couldn't decide to increase their pay or organise a shorter work day etc. Socialist means it's "socially owned" (owned and operated by the people that actually work there) By contrast, if Mondragon makes a massive profit then the workers can vote on how it's used. They can take it as a pay increase, or reinvest, hire more staff etc. The 2008 financial crisis resulted in massive layoffs for many organisations.....not so with Mondragon. The workers (owners) decided to take a pay cut for some, some were reassigned to different areas, some took leave at a reduced pay until such time as business picked up and then returned at full pay The workers at Mondragon (or any worker cooperative) vote for managers/executives (an option not afforded to employees at Amazon). Capitalism literally refers to owners of capital Socialism literally refers to the workers The middle ground is what Marx called the petite/petty Bourgeoise. An example of which would include a small business owner who both OWNS the means of production AND works at the business. He/she would still have employees but they may not be considered co-owners People often conflate capitalism and "the market" Capitalism refers to the owners, "the market" refers to the distribution of goods and services. Markets existed before capitalism and the two should not be considered synonymous. Sorry for the wall of text.

In facts Lenin didn't even label as socialist. He called it state capitalism which he considered to be a first step on the way to socialism. Think of a social club....are all social clubs government controlled?

  33.  @zenxel  but shareholders aren't workers, they are absentee owners. Just because SOME employees own shares, it doesn't mean ALL workers are co-owners. The exception doesn't prove the rule in this instance. In a socialist enterprise, ALL workers are co-owners, and non workers cannot co-own. See Huawei, for example. You cannot own shares of Huawei unless you work there as they are not publicly traded. It is solely worker owned

They refer to ownership, not operation. You're conflating the market and the means of production again. You never answered my question - where did you learn what you know about socialism?

It's better than capitalism because a worker has more control, job security, pay, conditions etc. Employees can vote for their managers (if the manager sucks, they get voted out) Here's an example of how it's better (just ONE example). Publix supermarkets (the biggest coop in the US has never laid-off any employees since its inception in 1930. How many have Amazon laid-off since their inception? Workers generate surplus value, I believe they should get to control it. That's what makes socialism better.
