"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” (Karl Marx, 1875) I’m not criticizing the guest, but simplifying what he’s trying to say. The Soviets tried (mightily) for nearly 75 years to achieve this societal ideal, but failed miserably. It certainly wasn’t due to any lack of effort, but rather their failure to understand that building a perfect society requires first the perfecting of its citizenry. Communism (wrongly) believes that mankind is basically good, but has been exploited, miseducated and led astray. This was the reason that the “New Soviet Man” never appeared. Friedrich Engels predicted a gradual “withering away of the state,” which never happened. Quite the opposite occurred, as state socialism under Lenin and Stalin became an all-encompassing monstrosity. Government, in its most limited and non-intrusive form, as a constitutional republic, is the best we can hope for this side of eternity.
