As long as you don’t mind some cold weather (and as a Canadian that’s something you should be accustomed to), I’d suggest (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota) as affordable options with fairly conservative state governments. Wyoming especially has one of the lowest overall tax burdens in the States: 4% sales tax, $0 individual income tax, very low property taxes (0.55% for owner occupied), NO estate or inheritance taxes (you still pay Federal, though). And these states are close enough to Canada to make visiting feasible. Cheers.
