@The Paradox Destroyer Of course it was, as you say, a "trite joke." It was a statement using hyperbole to show the outright greed and ruthlessness of government tax collectors. Their avarice knows no bounds, but they can't push it too far, lest there be an outright popular rebellion. Remember, America was founded by tax protestors. And, BTW, I'm NOT one of those "super-rich." Quite the contrary, I might be considered lower middle class by some. Cheers.

@The Paradox Destroyer Sadly, the middle class, which has hitherto been the backbone of our modern economy, is going the way of the great auk. As you correctly pointed out, the middle class is being systematically eradicated. And this is by design, not by mere happenstance. The elite are following the same game plan as V.I. Lenin, who stated, "The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation." We can see that this has already happened in most South American nations. The wealthy 5-10% exploiting the rest of the poor 90%, not unlike wolves devouring sheep. That's their agenda for the USA, and ultimately the rest of the world. An "enlightened" elite ruling over the lumpen proletariat. Cheers (or not).
