Arrived in California late 1968, while still on active duty with the military. Thought I had found the Promised Land, and, in many ways, it was. Plenty of things to see and do, wonderful climate, and friendly people. Shortly thereafter I got married, became a civilian again, and settled down in the Central Valley. Cost of living was dirt cheap, and our first home was under $20k ($100/month house payments!). The 1970’s were (mostly) great, even into the 80’s things were fine. But then everything seemingly went downhill by the mid 90’s. Crime, taxes, inflation, pollution got worse and worse until we said “enough.” Relocated to a different (mountain) state and never had any reason to regret our decision. Feel sorry for any middle class people that choose to remain on this sinking ship.
