@Gillemear I should have been more precise in my comment. I meant that the Brits should leave the six counties of Northern Ireland, and allow the Irish people (Catholic, Protestant, or whatever) to chart their own course as a unified, free nation. Nothing wrong if British people want to live peacefully in the Irish Republic. Cheers.

@Gillemear Easily 5 centuries, from what I've been able to research. English rule in Ireland built upon the 12th century Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland on behalf of the English king and eventually spanned several centuries that involved British control of parts, or the entirety, of the island of Ireland. So, if you count back that far, we're talking about 800 years or so. Understandable that the Irish would have "deeply held grudges."

An object lesson in the perils of trying to assimilate those groups who, by nature, are NON-assimilable. In France, as Peter mentioned, it is the legacy of past colonialism. In America, it is the legacy of past ethnic slavery. In both countries, the end results are the same: self-segregation and intractable civil strife. Bonne chance France. Vous en aurez besoin.
