@pooooornopigeon Well technically, according to them, my pension is based on the 22 years. I joined on January 9th 1984 aged 16, as a junior soldier. One year training, passed out in December 1984. They, being kind to us gave us a month's leave over Christmas. Flights booked, report to Chester, January 85. Got there, was on the Rear Party, as apparently everyone was in Germany. Fair enough, cleaned the camp up, and sent over to Germany. Then I remember this to this day, my birthday is in April, so the day before it, called to the Company Office to sign on? I was like wtf, I've been in the Army for the last year and a bit. Of course as I put it, it was just for fun and didn't count. So my 22 years started in 1985. I actually officially left in April 2007, one day before my birthday. Although I was sent on gardening leave in November 2006, as we were disbanding, I was Royal Irish Regiment at this point. So they paid me anyway until the April, got a double payout, so all good. So yes I mentioned 23 years, as in my mind that's what I did. Man and boy.

@royalirishranger1931 I can only assume you were in before my time, or we overlap at some point. Only name I recognise is Roy, as he was a CSM of C company in Osnabruck. I met the great Roger on a few occasions, can't say I was a friend. Not a bad fella, but this may just be 1st Battalion bias on my part and others, that when the 2nd Battalion was disbanded, it did appear that a lot of people were suddenly promoted, nothing wrong with that, but certainly people who didn't deserve it? We were in Cyprus at the time, a lot of people we didn't know just turned up. Tbh, in my platoon, Recce, was no problem. However, as time went on, they as in 2nd Battalion, seemed to have more influence? I was posted away, came back in 97, back to Recce Pl, first bloke I met was Billy McCullough? A CSGT. What a wa***. From that, looking around, my view changed big time. We went to Northern Ireland, then Kosovo, and another twat, Green, was CSM. Terrible person. Thankfully in early 2000s, I escaped to the home Service, best move I ever made. Unbelievable how they treated the troops. Was like joining a different Army. Let you home, more family time, etc. Really opened my eyes to how the normal Battalions treated our troops. In comparison they were terrible.

@royalirishranger1931 Can't remember tbh, I left in 2007, so names are sometimes a blur. However, I remember certain individuals who were the bad ones, amazing that? Seriously, most were good, unfortunately some stick out more than others. Not being nasty, but most came from the then 2nd Battalion. Personally I'm a Belfast man, as most of them were, I'm from the East, they seemed to be from the opposite side, as in side of town. They just seemed different, towards us in the 1st Battalion?
