  2. To be fair this is academia's goal! Up through 12th grade it's taxpayer-funded. After that the prices are through the roof! If a high school diploma is worthless you have no choice but to go to college. AKA you have no choice but to give them tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars

By making a high school diploma absolutely worthless because they're given out to every Tom Dick and Harry no matter what the only way to prove you have any amount of education is a college diploma. And college diplomas are extremely extremely expensive! So the only way to prove that you're not a dumbass is to give a college tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. At the end of the day it's all about the money!
