Beaches in Thailand and Bali are full of Chinese tourists, so Maldives is just another option for them. Flights from China to Maldives are cheaper than to Bali. Maldives is safer than Bali.

Much of the debt Sri Lanka borrowed from USA, and its USA forcing Sri Lanka to pay back the loan, while China sympathetically tells Sri Lanka don't worry about its debt to China, it can pay later when it can without any extra interest or penalty. Not one country with debt to China and can't pay back is being forced to pay, some of those countries like those in Africa even had their debts erased by China, never needed to pay back! This is why poor countries are flocking to get help from China without hesitation.

WTO started almost 3 decades ago but has only a few more members. China is not demanding Sri Lanka and Pakistan to pay back their loans, China tells them nothing to worry, there's no rush to pay back, just take their time, so their financial problems have nothing to do with China.

According to the Maldives Tourism Ministry statistics, in 2023, there were 209198 Indian tourists, and there were 187118 Chinese tourists. As you can see, almost as many Chinese tourists as Indian tourists. Moreover the Chinese tourists have much more spending power. Maldives will get many more big spender Chinese tourists by connecting directly to China, fights will be even more cheaper and there will be more flights. From January to October 2023, there were 229537 Chinese tourists visited Bali, instead of going to Bali many Chinese tourists will be going to Maldives which is safer. The Chinese have been a major boon to global tourism as they are regularly the world's highest-spending visitors, enjoying luxury hotels, tours, souvenirs and designer brands.
