  2. I've seen a video that compared the off-road version of the VW (the Kubelwagon) with a WWII era Jeep. Surprisingly the 2WD VW kept up with the 4WD Jeep for the very reasons that you mentioned -- light weight and the weight biased over the rear wheels.
