I think that you've pretty much hit the nail on the head. For anyone who has raised teenagers to be adults, this process will be familiar. It's called "Adulting". Sometimes, tough love is required to get the young people in question out of the house and functioning as adults. That seems be a good analogy to what the relationship between the US and Europe is going through right now.
