@Trick-Framed what happened there could happen to him. Then he had to make a choice between his country and himself. He could accept that nothing lasts forever and prepare Russia for a peaceful transition to his successor, whenever the people naturally decided he'd been there long enough. Or he could choose his own future and dig in for as long as possible, whatever the cost to Russia was. The CCP also had the same choice when Hong Kong was handed over. It could have been used as a testing ground for policies that prepared the PRC for a post CCP world, or it could decide its own power was more important and view Hong Kong as a threat to be crushed. Which is why whenever you ask a wumao to explain how the PRC can peacefully transition to a new govt, you'll get evasion.
