@digitalcitizen4533 I think the general rule was that if it was good for something to resemble a tank, then that thing was good.... At least as far as its tank like qualities went. Otherwise, results varied.

@glurgbarble7268 I obviously haven't had personal experience, but from what I've read about east Germans finding their stuff in western bargain bins... No they weren't. A lot of consumer stuff was really, really, really well maintained, but that was more because if it broke, you weren't getting another one.

@sakura44553 there's a bit of a selection bias here. You're paying attention to the stuff that survived while ignoring the stuff that didn't.

@sakura44553 are you saying that talk about the stuff that survived doesn't have a selection bias towards the stuff that survived? Are you saying that if you can't replace something, you won't put more effort into maintaining it than if you can replace it?

@Diego-lt4wm I'll put it this way: That it was done was good. The reason why it was done was bad. If the reason it was done was simply that by design, it was the most efficient use of resources, that would be one thing. But it was done because there was a massive scarcity. If I have a crash this morning, I can get a brand new car this afternoon if I choose. In the Soviet union, I'd have waited a decade because the stock simply wasn't available.

They're making great strides in that area.

@sakura44553 considering the amount of environmental damage I've personally seen socialist governments cause, that post is pretty funny. Save it for someone who hasn't been going around the PRC for the last couple of decades.

@sakura44553 again, save this for someone who doesn't have extensive personal experience with a what socialists create. My own personal experiences have told me you're full of bollocks.

@worldoftancraft but not a capitalist government. As much as they embraced capitalism (when the alternative was being destroyed) they never liked it. It was always a thing they put up. Now we can see the effect of that dislike with Xi doing what he can to wind back Deng's reforms and going after anyone who's too successful or that he doesn't control. I chose my words carefully.

@worldoftancraft why would I need to write more? You seem to have this idea I said something I'm pretty sure I didn't. Obviously I might have have missed it. If you can quote me saying China isn't a capitalist country or something similar, that would be great. As it is, it absolutely is a socialist government. They didn't allow capitalism because they wanted it. They allowed it, and continue to allow it because they have no choice.

@Diego-lt4wm what is? There's a lot of posts done a year ago

@Diego-lt4wm more likely depended on party position and job. Reward loyalty. Like the PRC has a pretty good pension system if you're in the party. Somewhat less impressive if you're not.
1
@Diego-lt4wm reading up on it. It's interesting. I overall it's obviously a bet you'd win, but there's more nuance to it than both of ours.

Was it better to live in Moscow than other parts of Soviet Russia? Quora thread with a discussion on this
1
@u2beuser714 it's a heavily capitalist society with a govt that really, really, really doesn't want to be. "privatise when we must, make state owned we can (better personally control and profit from it)"
1
Because the effects of it lived on. There wasn't some magical blank slate or cut-off line when you could say the incompetence of the USSR was just a thing for the history books. Russia today is based on what the Soviet union left behind.
