Was taken through this while on a tour in Berlin. Now I'm in Hong Kong and seeing that nothing has changed. Authoritarian thugs are only able to deal with their people through force.

@FlymanMS depends on whether there are alternatives to violence. What the people here have learned is that peaceful protests are treated with contempt by governments that can ignore the ballot box. Violence, on the other hand, has gotten results.

@Zadrigo if you prefer, we can go into a discussion on the effect of functional functional constituencies on the actual election results, and proceed from there until a debate on whether a puppet appointed by various mechanisms from Beijing is really introducing much difference. After that, we can move onto the voting methods for the CE. Which is setup in a way that's designed to effectively allow Beijing to appoint whoever they like. The most democratic elections in Hong Kong are the council elections. The legco is designed to be bloody unlikely to go far out of Beijing's control. The CE is designed to only go out of Beijing control in the event of severe incompetence.
