China imported a record 164.5 million tonnes of grain in 2021, up 18.1 per cent from a year earlier, official customs data showed. The country’s food self-sufficiency rate has fallen to 76.8 per cent in 2020 from 101.8 per cent in 2000, a ratio that is expected to drop to 65 per cent by 2035, according to Du Ying, former deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission.
