I can sorta understand the neighbor. Sometimes neighbors are protective and/or suspicious of strange people in their neighborhood. I noticed one day that my neighbors across the street were gone & unfamiliar young people were coming & going at the home. I wrote down license plate numbers & was a bit unnerved. Finally, my neighbors returned to their house & explained that these young people were in a study group with the wife's sister, who I had never met nor seen, and she was there to look after their dog while they were gone. I was extremely relieved.

I knew a couple who attempted to be "separated" while he lived in the basement & she lived upstairs. I recall him telling me he felt as if he were living in a tomb. He had already lost his job, then his wife, who cheated on him, which meant that his depression was already at an all-time high before he moved into the "tomb". I just can't imagine a separation that's not separate.
