Yes, it's akin to never leaving Europe due to the severe problems there throughout history.

It doesn't even matter in this context, going to Mars doesn't degrade goals on Earth anymore than exploring the "New World" caused decay in Europe 500 yrs ago.

@jamesheartney9546 Not at all, as a percentage of GDP, which is what matters, those expeditions across the Atlantic were very expensive. Wealth is created or not, Elon CREATED extreme wealth and has every right to spend it as he choses, what's left after massive taxes he pays, just like anyone else. I don't want to dictate that you must only own a bicycle if you want and can afford a car. If tax monies are involved and YOU are contributing to those taxes, THEN you have a say, not otherwise.

@pinbread9161 SpaceX has saved us billions in taxpayer money and you do have a say in it. Do you vote and call your representatives occasionally? We'd still be paying Russia for space station access if not for SpaceX.

@Call-me-Al Obesity was the biggest killer, so to speak, and that's entirely optional condition. (other than medical practices that also slaughtered many via sedatives and ventilators)

I sure don't want to move to Mars but celebrate others doing so, and it's no one's biz how someone who has created enormous wealth, spends it. Within rational environmental and risks to non-participants.

Is it true that Bill is really pregnant? 😉

Panspermia still on the table. Hope I live to see life we find on Mars and Jovian/Saturn moons, which I expect we will. Be most interesting if it has independent origins but my guess is it will be of same origin as Earth life, all of it.

@MrShobar Good question, it has some useful scientific purposes, whether that justifies the price is questionable. I've never been thrilled about it but it's a commitment the US has made w international partners. Only SpaceX can do deliver military satellites above LEO or can reliably even reach LEO. Also vastly cheaper than whatever alternatives may still exist.

Doomsters like climate alarmists??

As long as my avocado trees continue to thrive in N California, rest of ya can suck icicles. 😄

Trust Fauci and Co. to make lab variants highly human transmissible.

Leave it to governments to make the worst choices and turn $100 into $1.

They need to be seriously vetted as most folks will not have the right stuff for that ordeal. I totally embrace the opportunity for others to conduct that experiment but I need nature, rivers, mountains, forests, outdoor experience.

@-tarificpromo-7196 A winter at Antarctic outpost would seem marginally useful, even that would filter many. I've experienced cabin fever snowed in at old cabin in the wilderness for a week and it can make one do some risky things. Can't even fathom what that could be like when "home" is pale blue dot, the sun is small and dim, etc.

@dtylerb Then you can be greenhouse compost at least. That's a few kilos of useful material.
1
@dtylerb Your spacefare is by mass (as airfares should be), you are philanthropic.

If governments are pushing it, it's usually a loser.

Starlink?

@MrShobar It gives us experience with occupied habitats in space which is essential for eventual more ambitious goals. One could argue that should no longer be a taxpayer burden as privateers are increasingly capable of it, but none have so far.
1
@MrShobar I endorse SpaceX and all they do, no strong opinion on NASA and space station stuff, space station has little to do with SpaceX except they are the only one's who can reliably get there from the US. NASA's deep space exploration is their only real value anymore IMO, toss in the Moon ambitions as worthwhile too. We could save a ton of wasted money by scraping NASA's SLS rocket that's extremely expensive and largely obsolete.

Panspermia a given. Only question is range of time and distance, inter stellar? Inter galactic? YES I think so.
