That latch made to take the impact of a T-bone crash so it may be OK for that step, also the leverage is reduced by half due to the down leg of L-bracket. Many latch catches are not made like that however and I'd definitely take a close look at how strong that catch is especially pulling it down, the one pictured looks like it could take it.

@danz409 Crashes don't limit themselves to one direction of force the catch has to be stout in all directions. Take a look at the catch in the picture, think you could stand on the end of it? That's the same bending load it gets from the step.

@danz409 Nope. A claw hammer has entirely different leverage characteristics. Like I said before the down leg is long enough to cancel roughly half the horizontal lever. Imagine if the down leg was, say 2ft long, would you still compare it to a claw hammer? You work with tools, don't be obstinate. On the other hand imagine if the "pry contact point", the pivot or in this case the rubber stop against the door frame, if that was only a centimetre below the latch. (going to the opposite extreme) then absolutely it's even more sever than a claw hammer and would likely damage the latch structure.

@danz409 Look at it another way--would you design a claw hammer or pry bar with equal length levers? Say a 2ft from pivot to hand hold and 2ft from pivot to the where the "nail" your removing is hooked??
