@kayakMike1000 Right. Sort of in my old stomping grounds, it was a some 150 yr old mystery, no one could figure out, then this mundane solution from, I believe, an unmanned cam setup to watch. Desert temps swing wildly between night and day so about as soon as the sun rises the thin ice layer usually disappears, making the phenomena extra hard to detect. (I didn't bother with this vid)

Close but not quite--the ice captures the rocks and acts like a sail in the wind, dragging all the rocks thru the mud on nearly identical trajectories. Ice acting as a "sail" may sound unlikely but just as wind causes ice to pile up on the shores of Great Lakes on occasion, a big enough surface area in strong wind, concentrated, can be forceful.

@kayakMike1000 The reason the tracks last so long is due to the short lived and rarity of that 'lakebed' containing surface water at all.
