Stalin must have indeed "remade the nature of man" in the region, to some degree. He specifically selected the best, anyone with a spark in their eyes was slaughtered, even those whom supported him as they could become a threat to him. This is genetic selection as much as individual attribute selection that surely will have long term consequences.
