  1. Minor technical point--an overheated firebox; not about melting but steel losing strength with increased temp, those steels will have lost *most*of their strength by "red hot".

  3.  @albertshumate7688  Hmmm...that doesn't sound right to me but definitely IDK. Tangent--sounds like engineers generally, routinely had to compromise between boiler failure risk and "stalling" on an upgrade risk, which could also be dangerous. Apparently this was a rare type event. Said here one guy had argued for more water at last chance, just before he died.
