DBR Liamg Wrong. One of the very few fundamental required restraints on capitalism is disallowing monopolies. There is NOTHING good about communism no matter what you do with it, it's universal poverty and lack of freedom by definition. Money politics is a separate but related serious issue for many decades, highly corrosive ongoing problem.

Charles When China was completely communist everyone was starving, remember? Untold millions died from it was the very definition of starvation a few decades ago. Then they allowed private enterprise and begun to thrive as a result. It's still rotten in many aspects such as the absence of a justice system, tracking your every move and punishing anyone who criticizes anything about the ugly side of the nation and the wealthy only achieve that via connections and corruption. But there would be NO wealth beyond the party elite if not for a significant degree of capitalism allowed. Have you failed to notice that the most quintessential capitalistic organizations on the planet are thriving in China now including Apple and Tesla?? THAT's why they have risen half way from the HELL that communism brought on them just as any other form of state sponsored slavery always does. Are you 12?

Charles Do you have a problem with free enterprise? Is it YOUR BUSINESS what transactions I make with consenting adults? When I was your age China was totally communistic and it was literally the definition of mass starvation. Definition of Communism: "From each his ability TO each his need." Somehow that sounds good on the surface to the naïve but it's the definition of hell in practice.

@soisitimpossible Well said. We don't entirely fail as a nation of course but your on target for the rest. I can't imagine my job getting done by anyone without substantial direct rewards. Anyone of average health and intelligence can become wealthy in America and it's been that way for at least half a century. Not suggesting one should seek that over other pursuits but it should shut up the whiners.

@68Tboy We do need more protections from nonsense like that. Licensing is typically a means of reducing competition. Going thru the contractors licensing process it's blatantly nothing but a roadblock for small upstarts. We need better protections against such anti-competitive crap and political campaign finance reform. But monopolies can form in totally unregulated environments too.
1
@soisitimpossible No arguing with that.
1
K Jhnsn Surely you understand that capitalism is not equivalent to anarchy? A few controls are necessary for it to work including disallowing monopolies, this isn't news.
1
K Jhnsn Some examples?
1
K Jhnsn OK so you got NOTHING, just another cheap talking YT child regurgitating dogma that you can't support.

@SaudadeSunday No one is saying free markets can work without some restraints mainly to disallow monopolies plus externalities like the environment. With the exception of the worst, ultimate monopolies--aka. governments, they are otherwise uncommon.
1
@LongDefiant YEAH I have an agenda, I want a quality free as reasonably possible LIFE. Don't you?
1
@LongDefiant No businessman has ever tried to harness you, to enslave you, he offers you what you are worth to HIM in the capacity he has available. If you don't like it you are free to take responsibility for your own sorry life and create your own goddamned job or find better terms from someone else. NONE of us owe you a living.
1
@LongDefiant I didn't take it to extremes you did. You want me to be your slave bc you probably didn't do a damn thing to prepare yourself for productivity, correct? I'm not advocating anarchy or laissez faire capitalism, it's always a matter of degree. NOTHING good ever get's done without free enterprise, China was synonymous with mass starvation when I was a kid--literally. While the CCP is still evil and extremely repressive they had to allow a significant degree (as corrupted as it is) of meritocracy, aka., capitalism, in order that ppl could escape extreme poverty and it worked fantastically. Meanwhile Cuba, N. Korea, Venezuela remain hellishly poor and entirely predictably. That's your ideal, is it not? You don't "owe me the gainful use of my property" WHAT!?! WHO the HELL do you think you are to say what I may do with my life? That's like saying "I don't owe you the right to LIVE." Get it??? If you were worth a DAMN to anyone you wouldn't be advocating this crap. Get off your ass and learn some valuable skills as I have no intention of supporting your lazy life.
1
@LongDefiant You should take a look at that horror story of USA slavery as it's very similar to what you advocate and certainly not remotely what we have now. SURE a few benefited at the price of the majority back then and it was WRONG, just as your version of government monopoly slavery is WRONG. What are you good at? Can you support yourself?
1
@LongDefiant I exchange value for value with other willing participants in the transaction. Capitalistic acts between consenting adults, I don't ASK you for permission I demand that right. There is zero force involved in my ideal and YOURS is 100% about force. Think about it. Which is just, equitable and healthy and which is sub-human? You don't have to buy my fruit and I don't have to buy yours (not that you produce anything anyway).
1
@LongDefiant What ARE you advocating for the third time??? Please tell me. How did you earn your "plenty"?
1
@LongDefiant Would you be triggered if I were to advocate silencing you? I can make the case that we should censor everyone like the CCP, your hero regime, No? Tune into those who have lived in under the boot of the CCP for the last decade if you don't know what that's like.
1
@LongDefiant One thing I do not advocate is vitriolic exchanges like this, but while you don't admit it to yourself, you advocated my enslavement to SOME DEGREE greater than I suffer today. I pay property, income, sales taxes and capital gains taxes on TOP of all that and I don't even protest. I agree we need some taxes it's debatable how and how much. I bristle at the hint of : "To each his need from each his ability." ...a recipe for hell on Earth. I don't know that you'd go that far but you haven't told me what you advocate other than something akin to extreme racism with your insanely stupid characterization of the most productive aspects and ppl in our society. Please tell me what you advocate.
1
@LongDefiant For the 5th time--PLEASE tell me what you do advocate? What's your Great Society or Great Leap Backwards, or whatever. I never claimed to know what you want, do you even know? I only protest your IDIODIC demonization of the likes of Elon Musk who has done 100X more to save the planet then all the mandates and incentives from all the Ultimate Monopolies (governments) of the world combined.
1
@LongDefiant I could name a few things bad about totally unregulated capitalism monopolies 1st, those never serve us well nor efficiently including governments which are the worst monopolies in history. You pretend I'm presumptuous? Offering someone an opportunity to work for you, is by definition, to the benefit of the prospective employee. How can an extra choice be bad? Are you really that shitty a person to victimize an employee? I doubt it That's wacky non-thinking. I no longer employ anyone but myself either but I don't dodge responsibility for that 'failure' to be of even greater good...part of it is the punishment I get from the State of California for offering a decent job with a decent wage, the higher the wage I offer the more I'm punished. Being an employer is very stressful and difficult inherently, even without your mindset penalizing us for doing good. There was never a perfect era, this is as good as it's ever been so I'm not going to whine about much of anything. If I can't make it in the here and now there never was a chance for me in the entire Brief History of Humanity.

@LongDefiant Bottom line--we all share this precious fragile wonderful planet, we need to cooperate with as much mutual respect as possible. None of us can afford to be dogmatic.
