@Rory235 Only thing wrong there is "doing away with Li batteries"? MANY kinds of Li batts but no alternatives anytime soon nor are any alternatives required. Continued improvements in all aspects of Li batts continues, energy density, cost, charging spd, longevity....

@richtes Sure, everything gets complicated. Clearly the Tesla will be vastly cheaper to own and operate with significant additional upfront costs. Unlike car purchases, commercial is strictly by the numbers, won't take but a few yrs to verify cost effectiveness across the industry. Big chargers required take time to permit and link to the grid. Grid $/kwh varies widely as does diesel. Here in Commifornia, electric is stupidly high and diesel is expensive. All 3 of Pepsi's Tesla depos are in Cali.

@ljprep6250 Tesla aiming for 50k units per yr in a couple yrs, just from Nevada factory, that's a lot. For EU only minor changes required, Berlin factory should eventually build for that market. Then there's the rest of world, China a huge market, presumably Tesla will build those in China naturally.

@chrissmith2114 Compare depreciation to similar priced ICE cars. The biggest cost of a new car purchase has always been depreciation, why most should shop used, making payments means one is living beyond their means.

@will_dikfit2975 Pepsi hauls same max wt. in a Tesla as a diesel, granted BEV semis get an extra ton gross. That's what Pepsi says. Why would Pepsi lie about that and where are U getting your numbers?

@richtes Pepsi has 86 Tesla semis and the $200,000 saved is fuel alone, maintenance will also be much lower naturally. Has nothing to do with purchase price.

@richtes Having followed it since day one I'm already highly confident, but yes the proof is in the market place. I thought it was a stretch when Elon said they might get down to 1.7 kwh/mile, a yr or so ago. (others like Mercedes said 2 kwh/mile was impossible, original Tesla target) Pepsi averaged 1.6 khw for max heavy and 1.3 for medium wt. hauls. Now Elon says they are shooting for 1.5 heavy over next couple yrs of improvements. Obviously there's more to it than efficiency but no one else is close to those numbers which is typical of Tesla. New version Model 3 has stunned rigorous experienced 3rd party testers how efficient it is, way better than EPA estimates. The base line should of course also be 1M miles with no major problems, something diesels have been approaching, or attempting for decades.

@bcwest56 Tesla batts last half a million miles. Just wait until you have to pay $80 to fill a tank vs $12 to charge at home and an engine or tranny failure at 150k miles.

@jimreimers4213 They will take over most of the industry, it's been obvious to those focused on it for yrs, will be clear to all in next few yrs. Tesla is aiming for 50k units produced per yr out of Nevada, there is a demo rig in EU and a T. factory expected there as well as China which is a massive market. Obviously T. won't be the only player in the space, just the best so far by a wide margin and getting better.

@MattG-n2z It takes time to perfect the pilot rigs that Pepsi ordered 100 of, currently at only 86. The factory in Nevada expected to produce 50k units per yr is just going up. As usual Tesla is late but also exceeding expected performance substantially. I sound like an evangelist in this bubble, we all have to get out of our bubbles if we care about reality.

@MattG-n2z One reason Pepsi is only using them out of 3 depots is due to permitting time and cost of charging required for their rapid turn around times, running them around 1000 miles per day. For outfits where trucks are parked at night, cheaper easier to permit/install charging should suffice but the ROI will take twice as long.

@ljprep6250 Wide range but diesel semis are in the ballpark of $200k new, not clear what Tesla will initially price theirs at but it seems they could be worth double or more to operators, subsidies aside. (thinking mainly of 500 mile rated Teslas that can do some 560, also cheaper 300 range available) Bottle neck looks to be the high powered chargers most customers will need, permitting and power supply could take 3 yrs. Should be that trucks parked overnight will do fine w common car chargers, 250 or 350kw, easier quicker to install, instead of 1000 for fast charging that Pepsi needs running them multi shifts, they need to recharge while loading/unloading. Naturally the ROI will be longer for those not running the, say 150k miles per yr, that the likes of Pepsi does.

@carlsmith5545 What's your experience with Teslas? You realize that many haven't 'refilled' anywhere but at home for yrs at a time? They can't imagine needing to waste time at a gas station twice a week and spending all that money. True if you are the sort that drives 10hrs nearly nonstop, ICE is a little faster If U road trip a lot without kids or pets (requiring breaks) and money is no object and U don't mind the low performance of ICE? Have fun. I still love my old 3 pedal BMWs but I'll never spend much again on inferior ICE car. Eventually I'll power home and car off my roof.

@carlsmith5545 Exactly what features do ICE have? High maintenance, high fuel cost, poor acceleration, no tech to speak of. I used to take half an hr to warm up my 1-ton Chevy service truck on cold mornings enough to thaw it out to drive, that's lost range and time. In a Tesla just set it to heat the cabin for 5/10 minutes in advance from your phone, no need to even go to the car. How about leaving your dog in a parking lot on a 100F summer day? Can't do that very well unless it's a BEV which will control climate at minimal cost and tell concerned passersby the interior temp is good for dog, no need to break in and rescue it. What if U had a long day and just want to get home hrs away but are too sleepy to do it safely? Tesla will do the driving, nothing else will.

@cbmech2563 Yeah claims. I believe them but decide for yourself. If you think you know better than the customers of such trucks, good luck with that arrogance. When petrol cars were new one had to go to a hardware store to get cans of gasoline. Imagine how impossible it was in a mere 10 yrs to produce not only gas stations but refineries and the rest. Yet they were compelling enough vs horse power that the market took care of it.. It happened. Likewise for charging infrastructure except that's going to be faster, easier and cheaper than liquid fuel production and distribution was in 1910.

@kdrapertrucker Sure. For quality cars, BEVs burn around 1/10th as often as conventional ICE cars. You don't store your phone in your home or pocket, right? They burst into flames all the time as U know, why they aren't allowed on airliners.

@tedparker640 82k is US limit for BEV rigs. Pepsi says their heavy loads are not compromised at all with Teslas. IDK where U get your numbers but I'll take Pepsi's claims over randos with an axe to grind.

@nyxline I get how U might not like the looks but the reality is, coming from Pepsi, the only fleet currently independent of Tesla's own, they haul full max loads of the toxic drinks 500 miles no problem and charge by the time they can be loaded or unloaded. No compromises all benefit. Run hard (say 150k miles/yr), Pepsi claims they save $200k over 3 yrs running Teslas. But don't let reality intrude on your emotional needs, reacting to life with unchecked emotions is the path to success. Ask any incel, lol.
