@felix-eeee It's also the most isolated part of state, 300 miles of solid Sierra wilderness (no roads) cuts it off from rest of state, with all the good and bad that that implies. No roads is ALL good, can't have real wilderness anywhere near a road or any sort of lazy easy access.

@felix-eeee I see. Only recently learned you have some of 'our' Cali redwoods, modest groves semi wild. Much of what we do should be for future generations. I don't consider 2000/3000 yr old trees to be a renewable recourse, takes too long to replicate obviously. A shame so much has been lost including other giant tree species, similar in size to redwoods but farther north. (as well as in many parts of the world of course) All we can do is preserve what's left and promote gradual long term expansion of similar.

All's well that ends well. I'm sure they'd do it over again given the chance. 😄

These peaks would be a hole in the ground where I was raised.

@felix-eeee Owens Valley California, deepest valley in continental US, peaks rise 2 vertical miles on each side. Biggest reason I put up with horrific political landscape is the natural landscape. :D)

@felix-eeee Thanks for asking. Yes if you ever visit and have the time, a week hike in the Sierra backcountry highly recommended. For an easier spiritual experience, giant coastal redwoods are here too and a must see. Never been to UK but loved my time in Portugal and Spain.

@felix-eeee I knew a family who moved from Owens Valley to Germany and they came back simply (probably not simple but a primary reason) due to inability to ever get away from other ppl, which is almost of the definition of wilderness. Yes there's Norway but I'm sort of done living w snow half the yr as much fun as I've had in it. Like to have access without dealing w it daily. I can grow everything from avocadoes to apples and I do, here in farther N. lowlands Cali only couple hrs from high country.

@felix-eeee From a distance w limited knowledge and perspective--seems UK should reforest much of those barren hills. (not mountains to ME, lol) It would require bring back big predators which is never easy. IDK to what extent they were ever forested but understand a lot was. We've done it to a degree with wolves in the US West and never wiped out the big cats fortunately, they control the deer, large herbivores, without any significant hazard to humans. Mountain lions almost never mess with us, they don't even allow us to see them. And ranchers can mix in a few burrows to protect their beef cows from wolves quite effectively. Donkeys are wonderful to have around just as pets and will be properly brutal against canine attacks.
