My 3 siblings and I knew all our childhood that 18 was time to fly the coop, not that we needed any encouragement we were ready to GO. It's the most loving thing parents can do.

@Tankeryanker339 I have hard time with the sympathy seeking, 1st get busy, no time for self pity. My folks were prepared to help us with college as long as we went straight from high school and did "well" in academics. Wasn't harsh, we could spend summers at 'home' while working and saving for college. Dad wouldn't put up with sitting around leaching off them for a day, never a problem we were all motivated. They only paid about $3k toward my education beyond taking care of me for 3 summers of long hard hr of work. Ton of double shifts and OT. No debt paid my own way.

@Tankeryanker339 Sounds reasonable. More than one way to do things, primary objective is to not subsidize sloth. WE, siblings and I, were all itching to be free.

@AavorSkyrender BE exceptional. Making excuses for failure is lazy.

@EKL-qu7ih Never been easy. I started in a tiny shack w a roommate, then a bigger shack with 3 roommates, or dorm w 6 roommates. U might prefer an apartment with several roommates. That's the way it's always been done. Struggle is crucial, character building and motivating.

@AavorSkyrender Winners focus on self improvement, integrity, character building and productivity, not what era they are stuck in. Losers focus on why they can't succeed. These are near the easiest times in brief history of the republic.

@Steven-gv1ke Sorry for that but old fashioned "tough love" not optional. Best wishes.

@alexm6715 Suit yourself. Depends a lot on how they were raised and innate disposition. IF they are chomping at the bit to leave then probably not a problem. IF they are content to avoid taking care of their own biz and you allow that? Probably forget about having grandchildren. I get how immature 20 somethings can be today if raised without household responsibilities, as easy peasy it is of late. Let them stay till 40?? End of family line most likely but none of MY BIZ. Totally different 150 yrs ago when kids were grown up by 15, or raised on a family farm or business today taking on chores and serious responsibilities starting at 5. They can take care of selves at 16. 20's is crucial to establishing life trajectory. A 30 yr old female is past her ability to retain a high value man, simple biological, evolutionary imperative.

@CASTRO45ACP If you have required significant responsibilities, chores since 5, increasing all along to present AND they are anxious to fly, they'll do fine. If they've been coddled then you have ruined their future. The extreme case is "trust fund babies", the most pathetic ppl in America, pity them, doubt I'd done much better without chance for character building struggles.

@jackcarraway4707 They were superb and we ALL thrived. Let's see how you and yours fair, very poorly I suspect. If you believe in coddling I'll guarantee bad results. Neighbor cross the road, only son, nice guy but obviously not happy, late 20's, no drivers license bc he's terrified of driving, obese virgin who ventures out of the house twice a week to take out the garbage. He's all but certain the end of their family line. But HEY--mommy takes care of him that's what counts, right?

@jackcarraway4707 How old are U and what have U accomplished?
1
@FirstnameLastname-yc2mt I began to transform into a competent self sufficient adult well before 18. By 21 I was living off my tiny shoestring steel contracting biz. What have your kids accomplished?
1
@Digger-Nick How old are U and what have you accomplished, or your children, siblings??

@totenfurwotan4478 Coddling is the worst thing you can do. Neighbor--about 28, nice guy, lives with mom, get's outside enough to take care of the garbage couple X/week. Too terrified of driving to have a license, timid misreble obese virgin having apparently accomplished nothing nor any progress toward self sufficiency. Doubt he can even swim or ride a bike. There could be middle ground but even half of that description is dismal.

@EKL-qu7ih FAR easier today to earn 6 figures in the trades, so NO you are wrong.
