Bring it ON...as a farther NorCali Lifer...we don't suffer a problem of too much snow in the Sierras but too little as a general rule. We could use 4X more. Crossing Sierras mid winter has always required attention to weather, preparation and/or cancel trip, go around.
16
SORRY...your "need it now" doesn't effect reality. If you weren't prepared for this it's on YOU. Sheesh.
13
My fearless leader Newsom...you are NEXT. (Cali lifer here)
12
Nice story. I pickup hitchhikers fairly often in general, some good experiences doing so and I used to hitchhike a lot many yr.s ago as a child/youth....sort of payback.
12
As a local to this region--BRING IT ON. We need this precip snow is money in the bank to fill our reserviors.
11
Many may have built their lives around what was, lake side property, businesses and such. No easy way and no way to please everyone, but not as bad as what the Native tribes had to suffer since they were dismissed when over damming our rivers.
11
Not a terrible life style, lot's of us love to camp by a river for vacation, these folks get to do it all the time.
10
Aluminum is in no way a "heavy metal", it's a major component of Earth's crust, ubiquitous and not generally a concern. The rest mentioned could be a concern but apparently of natural origin if not natural concentrations, still not likely a long term problem vs if the dams had never existed or 5 yrs forward.
10
BRING IT ON! We need it and 4X MORE.

@izziethetortilla5547 You don't seem to grasp the nature of the situation. It all happened extremely fast. Assuming you were the FIRST to know--the 30 minutes (minimum) it took you to drive from Chico to someplace in Paradise/Magalia you would have been surrounded by fire and a panicked torrent of folks trying to escape, cars crashing into eachother blocking the road, ppl getting out and running for their lives. Are you a really fast runner? There are reasons some 40 ppl and counting got burned alive. Determination is not always enough.
8
How about granting lot owners extension of property to river edge? "Yes you lose the lake but you double your acreage." Not a complete reimbursement immediately but long term as the river area recovers it's beauty.
7
It will be a beautiful river again before folks remember to chill out, lol.
7
"Bomb cyclone" aka., winter
6
Situation normal. Just a typical Sierra winter storm. Don't be fooled.
5
"Disbelief that it could happen again." Really!? That was your takeaway?? Paradise was always a tinderbox in wait of a spark and right past the burned out zones much of it is STILL completely unprepared.
5
Situation normal mid winter Sierras. We could use 4X more, bring it ON.
5
How about 1969? That was 'the beginning of the new ice age' on the Eastern Sierras. Some 30 ft in some places.
5
@kevinwake8789 Now that he's in the spotlight. . Notice his multi-felony record, child predator mentioned? IDK for sure at this pt.
4
It's their job description, turn everything into drama. Winter in the Sierras, situation normal. Driven those roads 4 decades and you could never expect easygoing mid winter on I-80, but it's highly maintained, they throw TONS of equipment to clear primary artery. Never closed for long.
4
No easy solutions at THIS point to these catastrophic conditions WE have created but it doesn't have to be like this. Over a century ago fires were almost seasonal and they were healthy , necessary to keep the forest open and to prevent the possibility of these devastating, inevitable catastrophes. How many such disasters before we are motivated to take the necessary actions to reverse decades of mismanagement of our Western wild lands? The fact that some native tree species can't reproduce until fire burns under them should be highly compelling as to the necessity of frequent low level, cleansing fires in these areas.
4
It's just a media clickbait term, situation normal, we call this winter in NorCali.
4
They were simply mentioning examples there are far more similar things being done.
4
Conditions we've caused on the landscape the real issue, not whatever random ignition source. Lightening not new. Catch and release of repeat felons seems suboptimal tho.
3
Looks like folks were preparing to load those things in vehicles but ran out of time and space.
3
@kitbenny4544 Same goes for all of them. Winter snow in the Sierras is not a new phenomena, the Donner Party happened very near there.
3
We store a lot of it, vast majority of fresh water on Earth is ground water and it is being replenished along with surface reservoirs. GREAT START to a drought busting rain season, but we need months of this. Edit: liquid fresh water I meant, ice sheets/glaciers not included.
3
Make fantastic fertilizer, unpleasant to handle but that was a daily early morning ritual for us kids at grandma's resort at Clearlake, CA. Clean the beach and bury the carcasses around rose bushes or whatever. A few buckets would do wonders for a garden.
3
Sentient hair jell.
3
Do you take your dogs shopping, to work everyday, etc?
3
LA Times reiterated "the end of Sierra snow" as recently as last November.
3
Same things said for last 40 yrs by these history deniers.
3
@thornil2231 Taking everything into account. Ground water top of list for several reasons, it's by far the biggest reservoir and fragile in ways we can't fix if damaged, subsidence is expected to be permanent, terrifically shortsighted.
2
LA Times predicted the end of Sierra snow just last November. Why do we still pay attention to Establishment Media Mafia, aka., propaganda?
2
Good for him. I knew some folks were going to stay and save their homes, it's a tough call to stay or leave as you don't know how it's going to go. One thing for certain--the more ppl who stay and fight it the better chance all the homes have including the deserted ones.
2
I do as Commifornia lifer. He's NEXT to fall. (Native American Great Spirit willing)
2
@imd1b4u Good points and you seem tab better informed on some of it than I. For what it's worth--highly recommend "Blancoliro" channel here, he won't get airborne until weather clears but really knows the area and covers reservoirs, snow pack, fires, etc. He became popular for by far the best coverage of the Oroville spillway failure and rebuilding.
2
Good times for NCali, fear drought, not snow or rain so much. 🙂
2
West side, over half so far burned, was 100% beneficial to local ecology, grass and scattered oaks. Forest Service was debating how to burn it for yrs...easier to "debate", let inevitable happen, lol, than face responsibility, liabilities. Not to downplay those burned out in East half, but a ton was saved. (fear and feel for my fiends and neighbors, most OK so far)
2
National parks ruin the places with excessive traffic and development too. Wilderness designation, keeping out all mechanization including such as bicycles is far more effective, much of the Sierras is so designated, you have to hike for days to get to the best places and it's that great filter, the lack of easy access that's the key. Tahoe hasn't been anywhere near as pristine as the backcountry since the first road to it.
2
And our idiot Newsom wants to ban home generators. Does he know how to do anything but stupid mandates?
2
Speculation from Mammoth Mountain Life: Could see some runs going thru August!
2
More of the same insanity that got us here. We need LESS regs not more.
2
About once every 160 yrs a train of atmospheric rivers turns entire Central Valley into a huge lake for months, most recently in 1862 which permanently modified Sacramento. Will happen again. Some $1T in damages expected and of course it will be blamed on SUVs and cow farts by history deniers.
2
Establishment media is hilarious.
2
Sentient hair jell.
2
@izziethetortilla5547 I'm sure pretty much everyone else rounded up their pets first if at all possible.
2
SO F'n lucky this yr. My farther NorCali nearby creek hasn't risen half as high as 2017 even, but we're above ave. Wonderful winter for us.
2
Media manages to find the one or three clueless individuals.
2
Tee Jaye There was no such thing as "targeted homes", I LIVE HERE so don't try to tell me you know better, you have no idea what's going on or what happened. But if you are actually interested in REALITY you may ask me some questions.
2
Tee Jaye I didn't read much of your rubbish comment. I'm here dealing with the effects of this disaster and keep on top of how and why, not a lot of time for silly children.
2
Tee Jaye Get a job, get a LIFE. Good Grief.
2
@kevinwake8789 MY point was U can't stop every source of ignition. T-storms happen, have forever. Flammable landscape is the problem. Wasn't always like this even in warmer times some 2k yrs ago. We F---ed things up, most but not all of which we can fix (can't replace 300 yr old tree), but not easily. Justice system reference a glib tangent.
1
BEVs catch on fire 1/10th as often as ICE cars. Pics show gas car which always burn eventually. lol Try again.
1
Very rare circumstances, 1000X more are in danger from other avoidable factors.
1
Poor disposal, they'll just float on down stream, may as well toss them in the river, easier.
1
NO. Probably not much worse than a typical home with a wood stove.
1
@thornil2231 Up to 30ft or so I believe. Not good. It won't rebound much, it's a permanent loss of capacity for your biggest best and, usually, only reservoir. Glacier ice aside, about 85% of our liquid fresh water is in the ground.
1
@thornil2231 And other food crops. We all eat but there have to be limits on pumping. Ultimately SoCali should probably rely on desalinization extensively, using less doesn't seem to be feasible. Long ago wrecked the Colorado River, Owens Lake, etc., for Los Angeles growth....tried to destroy Mono Lake too but the courts stop them. (my old man fought for Owens Valley against LA in the '90's, they won a few, mainly Mono Lake)
1
I guess DEW spared the few who stood up to it. lol. Nice examples!
1
This is a "record" for some small region over small time frame since 20 yrs ago, just for perspective. lol.
1
Don't be too sure about that, pretty common s3x position in some 'alternative lifestyles'.
1
@imd1b4u That aquifer is a big part of the ground water in question.
1
@imd1b4u The ground water we were referring to Good Grief.

Luckiest winter for Cali since 2017, drought buster!
1
Trailers are throw away structures not equipped to withstand anything slightly severe.
1
No development is possible without individual home owners demand.
1
@Sir_Wellington I compost everything, if it was recently living. Fish tho is top shelf stuff. :D)
1
It's the soft scared administrators....typically a bunch of wimp wannabes. :D
1
@kittymeekins1682 I can't say "the winters were harsher", we remember the exceptions. I woke to look out my window to see my even my upright bicycle buried in snow. It was thrilling near Bishop CA where one foot was about max in the "rain shadow" of Sierras. School shut for several days! YeeHA! (naturally prudence required shoveling some roofs as they were approaching max load if we got more snow, and manually clearing walks, driveway, what kids are FOR) Dad a geologist scoffed at the idea of glaciers growing out of the E. Sierras. "Yeah they would but every yr isn't going to be 1969 most likely."
1
@Ysckemia Just use some common sense, I definitely check them out as I approach. I normally have my wallet stuck between the passenger seat and transmission/drive line tunnel (I like rear drive manuals) and I do put that away. I don't want anyone dirty or sketchy but most folks are fine and very grateful for the ride. The worst experience I had was a guy who stunk so bad I let him off early. It feels good to help and I know exactly what it's like to be stuck on the side of the road somewhere. It's MY understanding that the American FBI fabricated the notion that it was dangerous to hitchhike or pick them up, they managed to set the tone for decades about a risk that never actually existed,...presumably to get back at the Hippies in the 60's, sounds unlikely perhaps unless you consider the vitriol between "establishment" and these renegades who challenged everything in particular law enforcement abuses. Hippies were the predominant hitchhikers back then, some traveled the nation that way while the rest used it as an emergency option if your car broke down or whatever. Us kids used it to get to and from town a few miles away or home from school if missed the bus, etc. I developed a simple strategy to get rides quickly,....and don't even try after dark.
1
Not to be dismissive of East side damage but West side is 100% healthy burn, over half the area so far. Forest Service has been wanting to burn Ishi wilderness for yrs but afraid to do it and knowing it was just a matter of time anyway.
1
@MadlyinLovewithJesus-1953 We tried but LA Times and rest of Machine fabricated nonsense about his replacement, Larry Elders. But at least we had a recall mid term revolt.
1
Having experienced couple dozen 'human detectable' earthquakes--this was one of the smallest. 5.5 is tiny.
1
Over half the burn area is 100% ecologically healthy, Forest Service has been wanting to burn Ishi land for yrs but afraid to do it, now it's being done just as they knew it would.
1
@ProLogicEnt1 SHEEEESH. Is there nothing you won't fall for? Like a high speed rail is going to EVER be built in rural mountains to nowhere. How gullible are you?
1
PG&E was in a no win situation and they only ignited the tinderbox, they didn't create the conditions that would have been lit by lightning if nothing else anyway. The real problem is mismanagement of wild lands.
1
@ProLogicEnt1 You need to start asking ME questions, your idea of "research" is feeding your naive preconceived notions. I LIVE HERE and know what happened, how and why. In fact WE had expected this to happen for at least 30 yr.s now. I had ash all over my yard Sport, it burned out many I know and right up to my town. Go ahead and ask instead of pretending you have any idea what's going on.
1
@KC-ww3zh What are you yammering about child? Are you even sober?
1
Situation normal.
1
Tough decision as to leave or stay but it looks like these folks could have, maybe should have stayed....easy to say in hindsight.
