Nice story. I pickup hitchhikers fairly often in general, some good experiences doing so and I used to hitchhike a lot many yr.s ago as a child/youth....sort of payback.

@Ysckemia Just use some common sense, I definitely check them out as I approach. I normally have my wallet stuck between the passenger seat and transmission/drive line tunnel (I like rear drive manuals) and I do put that away. I don't want anyone dirty or sketchy but most folks are fine and very grateful for the ride. The worst experience I had was a guy who stunk so bad I let him off early. It feels good to help and I know exactly what it's like to be stuck on the side of the road somewhere. It's MY understanding that the American FBI fabricated the notion that it was dangerous to hitchhike or pick them up, they managed to set the tone for decades about a risk that never actually existed,...presumably to get back at the Hippies in the 60's, sounds unlikely perhaps unless you consider the vitriol between "establishment" and these renegades who challenged everything in particular law enforcement abuses. Hippies were the predominant hitchhikers back then, some traveled the nation that way while the rest used it as an emergency option if your car broke down or whatever. Us kids used it to get to and from town a few miles away or home from school if missed the bus, etc. I developed a simple strategy to get rides quickly,....and don't even try after dark.
