  1.  @flight2k5  They sure as HELL didn't last anywhere near as long as today and required 10X more maintenance. When my dad was in college he'd do an inframe overhaul, mainly piston rings, every 30k miles on his car. Tires and brakes might last 8 or 10k miles, tune ups a few times per yr. Doing 35 mph sustained was really moving, they had a hard time stopping from there and handled like a farm tractor. Oil puddles were the norm in every parking space and driveway, on and on. You'd check the oil every time you got gas. Less than 10 mpg was fine. We are grateful they don't make 'em like they used to. When I was a little kid 100k miles on a car and was notable and much more than that everything was shot, seats to wheels.
