Self Centered is what many mean when they use selfish as a pejorative, if one cares about the biosphere it's selfish to help preserve the rainforest. One should recognize a healthy society allows for their nephews and grandchildren a chance to thrive which is a genetic extension of themselves so they may volunteer to improve their country as an act of broader self interest. Self centered is the infantile response that they are the center of the universe and their siblings, parents everything else takes a backseat. It's selfish for a parent to sacrifice their own well being for the sake of their children who are the long term expression of the parents lives. Selflessness is running into a burning house to save a neighbor who U know is plotting to murder you, don't do it, it's selfish to run into a burning house to save your own grandchildren, do it if theirs the slightest chance of success.
