  58. Expected to optimize tradeoffs between mass energy density and thermal management and can be used as structural element. Common form factors are much smaller, relics of consumer electronic applications and less suited for large packs. Also Tesla is struggling with dry fabrication process as apposed to established wet with toxic solvent method, dry process supposed to dramatically reduce production line footprint, CapX and eventually accelerate production rate. Some 90% of wet process footprint is just for drying the cells and capturing solvent vapors. Naturally you'd expect fewer larger parts means fewer problems, better reliability. How it all pans out remains to be seen, Tesla continues to use multiple form factors but the semi and CT as well as structural batt pack Y's all require 4680s, a lot is riding on them.

Investigations happen constantly even completely inane ones spurred by ignorant or self interested parties making racket, or legit, OR just to maintain the elusion of regulatory relevance. Oz is even dumber then America in some ways, FSD a good example of that. More ppl will die by delaying that progress but reality need not guide policy.

It's healthy creative destruction for them to be replaced and the union mafias to go down with them. 100 yrs is a long time for any company. I came from a time when Sears was nearly indispensable in rural America, now forgotten and not missed. Amazon is infinitely better.

Others may eventually reproduce aspects of the culture in many industries but I agree. Elon is transforming far more than just sustainable energy but also what a CEO should be, fundamental ways to run a biz from trivializing job classifications and college degrees to hierarchy nonsense and even how to value a stock. (AMZN broke a lot of ground on the stock market front) Deff believe Elon is crucial to further speed, vision and progress, however Tesla and SpaceX would continue to thrive for decades without him, just not as much.

Rental property owners will provide chargers on their own as an easy extra incentive for renters, they often provide far more expensive infrastructure like gyms and swimming pools that few use. Currently there just aren't many econobox BEVs available for the peasants, that will change fast in next several yrs. The real problem is the vast expansion in grid capacity required.

"Market Capitalization" is simply the number of shares X the price per share which defines the total value of the Co. It was only a few yr.s ago a common topic of market speculation who would become the very 1st trillion $ company, now that several have breached (at least temporarily) that psychological number it's been sort of forgotten about. Both Amazon and Microsoft make much or most of their money on cloud services. Apple makes most from it's "recurring revenue stream"--monthly fees for services not hardware anymore as one might think. All 4 are worth considering to own long term, I'm in MSFT and will get back into AMZN again. I'd suggest you owe it to yourself to dip your toe in the market, just a few shares perhaps at first, in a company you have confidence and conviction in. It's still the best way for most of us to grow/multiply our hard earned savings over time.

One simply opens an online broker account, it's free until you buy/sell a stock then you pay a modest transaction fee of maybe 4 to $7 regardless of the size of purchase/sale. Then transfer $X into broker account from your bank account and your on your way. Once you purchase a few shares, maybe just one share in a few different companies--you will automatically begin your self education on the topic as you'll be invested, however small, and become at least a little interested in market news, strategies, etc. (Pardon unsolicited advice from a stranger)

Pure ignorant speculation on my part: I'm thinking they will very badly want to be mass producing the new cells at both Austin and Berlin factories with first vehicles because major portions of the fundamental factory design and basic architecture of vehicles depends on new cell design. It would be far less efficient to build the old style only to toss out MOST of the batt production line and significant sections of assembly plants when new cell type is ready in a couple yr.s. ...dunno if they are going to be ready in time but that would mean mid to late NEXT YR. not 2 or 3 yr.s out. IF that proves to be the case the stock should rally big next yr.

I understand Renault is selling some models well, do they FSD? FSD is the biggest embarrassment to date for Elon/Tesla and it's been largely dropped from the bull case for TSLA due to being yr.s behind schd and doubts that it will ever be driverless. But 1/4 of Tesla buyers are willing to pay $8k for the system as unfinished and flawed as it is, it's getting better all the time. That's nearly $8k to Tesla's bottom line and it's not the only example of high margin software extras. Tesla seems to have learned from optimistic timing predictions and have gone from Over Promise Under Deliver to UPOD, in some cases recently. They have always over delivered on product specs just failed time frames, often badly. I believe they are sandbagging the spectacular battery advancements recently explained, they can't afford to admit how soon they actually expect to offer new platforms as it will cannibalize current offerings severely. I know I'd wait if I was car shopping. Regardless who is right or wrong these are the most exciting times in automotive history in over a century.

He was more correct than he could have imagined given 10X affordable oil available since fracking tech was developed. When a car be autonomous without geo limits is hard to say but I'm sure Elon is a hell of a lot smarter than you, no offense, and he has reason to believe it's going to work with the hardware they have. (some of the older cars did need upgraded computers which Tesla did for free BTW). Our roads are entirely set up for VISUAL cues, that implies a mostly passive visual system should not only be one viable approach but essential. Lidar can't see lines, signs, etc. But there will be multiple autonomous solutions from multiple players and that's a good thing.

Meanwhile legacy auto are losing market share and losing money. F and GM have debt equal to 4 to 5X their respective market cap. Why aren't they taking advantage of the credits? Even with lidar you still need visual to read signs, stoplights, road markings, etc. Clearly lidar is insufficient and not essential so why have it at all? VW is losing money on EVs I can almost guarantee you, they have no expertise in software or batts. Did they "fix" their software issues yet? Old Auto is in a real fix, most of their profits are from servicing which will disappear with EVs, they don't know how to make money on EVs, the dealer model is obsolete and they are burdened with legacy overhead like pensions and short term profit focus which will destroy them. VW will probably survive in some form.

In other words--this is not a measure of crucial energy density without volume change factored in. I think the previous page with 50% plus metrics are much more meaningful. They certainly are not making an equivalent batt 5X smaller or lighter. I don't think they reveled charging rate specifically just that it would be faster, I'd be surprised if it's 2X faster but what do I know.

I have much bigger problems with the 3 mm SS shell, first off the doors will be about double the wt. of regular truck doors which are already a handful if the vehicle is leaned much when parked as it will be often off road. Also the Frunk lid will be damn heavy even as small as it is and the entire front end needs to be crumple space, how is that going to happen with such ridiculously thick tough material? Finally--the cost of such SS is relatively extreme making a joke of the "saving money on painting" notions.

  295.  @mho0  Say it takes 5 min to perform a swap and the station is running full speed (small line of cars constantly) and it takes 1 hr to cycle the batts, that would only be a dozen packs required but meanwhile you pay not only for the full time attendant plus significant chunk of a 2nd batt. If the station is running at that rate your likely to have a few cars in front of you so 15 or 20 minutes to get in and out vs. a "Supercharger" 30 min to deliver extra 200 miles of range. I'll opt for the cheaper option and plug in myself where I'm paying only for the electric with say a 20% mark up. (assuming there are enough chargers that you almost never wait for one, reasonable given you can buy 50 chargers for every swap station) If there is no line at the swap station then you have to also pay for the employee idle time between cars. Granted in China labor is still cheap but in the USA the combination of paying for the employee, extra infrastructure and batts is surely going to add some 50% to the price of charging. No? (((yes those numbers are guesses but reasonable)))

You won't have the volume available for 150kwh anytime soon, not on most car designs, but around 100 plus. A swappable batt will demand a heavier less efficient, marginally more expensive chassis which translates to lower range and less electric efficiency too. Mass is your enemy. But as you said, the smaller 'daily' pack would benefit you in that respect so maybe it's a wash. I don't think the tradeoffs would be worth it to me but options and competition are always good. Super chargers probably cost 2% of a swap station but you may need 20 to 30 of them to match the swap station capacity.

I could be wrong about that but it appears that's where it's going, that to me largely negates the primary swap argument and swapping will cost significantly more if only to pay for attendant. It might be informative that Tesla early adopters were not interested in the swap proposal offered back then even when range and charging options were a lot worse.

I want an override feature, obviously that can't be accidental, for very rare situations where one needs to forget damage to save themselves, say a carjacking or natural disaster where one need ram through debris to escape a wild fire...very real situation where I come from. If a thug aims a gun at me I want the ability to run him over or push obstacles out of the way to escape, as unlikely as that is it's probably more likely than me hammering the wrong pedal.

Sounds unlikely to me except for very limited runs, prototypes mainly. They can cast front/rear car sections in seconds with high quality.

My guess is they last for a couple yr.s in one form or another and naive children will continue to gamble on "hopes" while pretending to be investors in the future not knowing crap about the situation at hand.
