Porsche has a 2 spd and it doesn't result in an efficient vehicle. Gear boxes use energy too. Spinning an E-motor faster is nothing like spinning a reciprocating engine faster.

@robincollis6349 Yes it's more accurate to call it a single speed drive train or transmission. (semantics in this context) VERY different from one with multiple ratios in terms of cost, complexity, weight, and opportunities for failure. Every continuously variable trans made today fails before 150k miles, half to fully totaling the car, most fail well before 100k, older style autos also fail. Only manuals can last but then the clutch may fail depending on abuse, expensive to replaced due to labor.

@robincollis6349 Maybe if expensive enough and frequently serviced CVT could last, fact is they don't even if serviced. Same with old fashioned fluid drive trans, they never did last well. Differentials rarely fail unless run dry ore utterly abused. Great comparison, a well made EV drive train will easily last 1 million miles with a few oil changes. Meanwhile and ICE will suffer around 100 oil changes in 1M miles, but they only last an average of less than 200k, some can go 500k (Honda, Toyota, expensive diesels) and when they are worn out the car is totaled. I've worked on 100's of semi trucks--MFGs been struggling to get them to 1M miles for many yrs, even oil filters on diffs and getting pretty close. VERY rarely is the diff the reason we are working on it even at 800k miles.
