Need not happen that soon but will happen. Also the used market will become 'the poor man's choice' in a few yrs with fine options at half original price.

@MorriesWigShop Nah...You are inventing problems that won't exist. New batts will last longer than the car with very few exceptions. And you aren't going to be "refurbishing" a 5 or $7k batt pack anyway. Even a pack designed to be worked on will require too much labor and expertise for that. "Pivoting away" is silly notion, like I said in a worse case (probably not going to happen) a blade pack will only have a slightly different mass, 100% interchangeable as far as the car is concerned. I seriously doubt seats and carpet are an issue. Do you worry about your $50 batt in your $500 phone being replaceable? I don't but then I don't live on my phone either.

@gangleweed Sure. To say it's the poor man's choice is just a way to emphasize the ultimate in utilitarian economy. ALL such folks will be significantly better off with total auto operating cost 1/4 what they've ever had available. Already for those who really rack up the miles, a 40 or $50k car payment is paid for by gasoline savings. Uber drivers say. When you can buy a nice one for $15k and find your "fueling" and maintenance costs slashed with 130MPGe? That's a fat savings for extra beer and cigs. HA!

Yes those cans are used that way and my understanding is CATL is making that form for Tesla. But it's not a huge deal to do the batt pack with blades or whatever, still structural. Batt pack should always be structural to some degree, it's always has some strength/rigidity which should reduce 'body in white' structure in that area of vehicle no matter who's building the car. For Tesla they can simply build the pack a little different to get the same structural properties out of it even if small trade offs required in weight and complexity, that way the rest of car can be identical with either type of pack.

@rogerstarkey5390 Not going to write a thesis statement here. You don't see much of what's actually happening, do you? You either have confidence in the facts, hints and expectations expressed by Tesla or you don't. Did you SEE when they modified the front/rear castings or went from 1 to 2, and all the other improvements? Not until they were out on the street you didn't, and then not until Sandy Munro exposed them. Not my job to convince anyone else. I've followed Tesla and Elon for over a decade with increasing intensity, made a fortune on it and expect to dwarf that going forward. If you are looking for absolute certainty you are in the wrong universe. Doesn't exist. That it's HARD is why the opportunity is so great, STILL. Decide for yourself. Your conclusions and choices are not my burden or concern.

@rogerstarkey5390 Another angle: We've seen FAR more stressful times in Tesla, 2018 the worst in recent memory, Elon was sleeping on the factory floor for many months, for all to see that HE was getting it worse than anyone else and there to be woken at any moment to solve problems on the assembly line as they struggled with the ultimate test of 1st mass production. Wasn't clear they would survive but Elon never quits. Today Elon is confident, relaxed and enjoying himself. Not complacent but able to laugh easy. Possible he's kidding himself but probably not to THAT degree. I have reason to expect they will solve crucial problems and continue to perform like no one else even attempts to. If the 4680 continues to lag, as it has so far (no big surprise to me), it won't be pain free but they'll find a way as they always have. Such confidence doesn't come quick and easy, I as millions of others, stressed with them. Over the yrs you begin to understand, they don't DO EASY but they find a way. Probably Elon's greatest strength is building spectacular teams and motivating them to do the barely possible. You may not have that confidence, most understandably don't, but you may not have "seen" what I and others lived thru. As an investment--I can only suggest you take the time to gain SOME of that same sentiment or simply stay clear. There are no shortcuts. Without REAL CONVICTION you'll bail at the worst possible time. Many claim conviction but betray the opposite by fretting over meaningless stock price action. They don't want to admit it but they are not invested they are gambling, a losers game.
