400 miles will be available and affordable by '25, you will likely change your mind by then too as maintenance, convenience and operating costs will be dramatically lower. (ironically I also don't want an EV and intend to run my 'old' 2011 BMW M3 as long as I can, but it's NOT a vehicle for most for similar reasons that a motorcycle isn't either)

@MrMichaelBCurtis 1200 mile range is a total waste, we don't even bother doing that with ICE which is vastly less damaging to efficiency than doing it with batts. Solid state isn't necessary. There are already the best option for most ppl and will be the poor mans only choice in a few yrs.

@MrMichaelBCurtis You are way out of date on this. Batts are being profitably recycled reclaiming 98% of the metals they are made of and they aren't toxic unless you are referring to old lead acid ones. That's laughable. Iron and lithium are in abundant supply and while FeLi batts won't serve all applications they will for most. Ni is the only significant limiting factor on the resource front, there will be pressure on nickel this decade which will be foreseeably required for higher E-density applications like a semi truck where mass is critical and, obviously, aircraft. Cobalt is nearly eliminated from new Tesla batts and apparently not essential even in tiny quantities. Most cobalt today is consumed (not recyclable) in oil refining, clearly that use will fade to zero. Sometime, maybe next decade, mining batt minerals will likely languish as recycling will replace most of the need for new metals. A lot more electric will be required, even more than when air conditioning came about increasing demand some 30% in a matter of yrs, more like 100% over some 15yrs. Fortunately we have more viable alternatives today then ever including safe nukes. I will be one of many who runs off my own roof and batt packs enough for home and a car or two. Batts have followed Wright's Law, cost coming down some 20% for each doubling of production, the metals part of the price is not close to the total cost of fabricating batts. Price will continue to plunge leveling out well below the cost of an ICE engine in a matter of yrs. 1st Tesla roadster had a $100k batt pack, today far superior packs are some 8 or $10k. That will become 5k before you know it.

@MrMichaelBCurtis No one is getting away with out so called Rare Earths. I imagine you have a cell phone? Price swings in the last 18 months are not a great indicator of much, oil went to negative value last yr, NatGas is up 300% now, on and on. The supply chain for EVERYTHING has problems!!! Your problem is some sort of emotional fixation against something that's new and dramatically better, tossing up every nonsense road block to EVs you ever heard of. Do you really enjoy oil changes, engine and transmission repair bills and the smell of exhaust that much? Meanwhile the WORLD IS SWITCHING to BEVs, like it or not your petrol is going to become range anxiety inducing as it becomes rare and expensive while charging options become ubiquitous and quick.. Keep an eye on Norway and others going to near 100% EV for new sales by next yr. See if their grid collapses and they all die.

Is money unlimited in your life? If NOT you will switch. You are going to want a 1200 mile petrol car by decade end as filling stations become sparse. So you are fine with paying 4X as much to operate a stinky ICE as a far superior in everyway BEV? You wouldn't want to miss multiple trips to the petrol station every week while your neighbors miss out by simply plugging in at home.

@MrMichaelBCurtis You will soon get 300 more miles in 15 to 30 minutes charge time with Tesla and others, time enough to pee and snack? I love road trips but rarely do 600 miles per day. How about you? Plugging in at home as most do most of the time--what do you care if it takes all night? Surely 200 added miles, if you work 14 hrs/day and park only 6, for a total 300 to 400 range will get you thru the average day, NO? And you don't actually fill up in 3 minutes, 10 maybe.

@MrMichaelBCurtis How dirty is recycling exactly? As bad as that oil spill off coast of my home state of California right now? I'm bit of a petrol head for several decades. Started off at 20 rebuilding small block Chevy 327 for worn out work truck I needed for my new biz, cam and header plus complete DYI overhaul, ran it for 20 yrs...rode "crotch rocket" hard daily for 15 yrs. Now love my 2011 BMW M3 with it's mechanical museum piece of a high revving, naturally aspirated, 4 valve 4 cam V8. I want to run that car until I can't walk it's the 2 wheel moto of my youth in 4 wheel form. Still enjoy my old 2001 BMW 330 too. Zero desire for an EV I want 3 pedals, rear drive with limited slip differential. LOVE the visceral nature of that V8 at 8000 rpm mated to manual trans! :D But it's not a family car nor for many anyway for the same reasons most don't drive motorcycles. But I see where it's going and why. I intend to have enough home solar and batt storage to run the house/shop and one or two EVs, minimum.

@MrMichaelBCurtis I'm a fan of things that work far better than legacy things. For example--if I figured HFCs (H fuel cells) were the future, were the most efficient way forward by wide margin--I'd be a fan of HFCs. Hypothetically (not actually possible) if someone came up with a quality $25k, diesel car with only CO2 and H2O emissions AND 200 mpg, I'd be a fan of THAT!
