  8. Shameless. There should be recourse for that sort of abuse. The book scam was just getting ramped up when I went 30 plus yrs ago. I got an engineering degree and paid my own way with zero debt nor help from family (tho they could've and would've) I didn't even want handouts from family. It was WORTH it for me due to valuable, challenging curriculum and lower prices back then.

TLTR! ::: (((I don't relish pain or suffering for many, but inconvenience, 'paying up', finding poor quality produce, some empty shelves, entire categories missing...at least. Been lite prepping since 2020 just piles of spam, whatever canned crap being pushed by Costco. HA!... dried fruit, 25yr grub mostly in steel cans, rodent proof abuse tolerant, canned dried black beans, water, salt... even tho 'we' produce far more than we can eat in nuts around here. Grow citrus, stone fruits, berries, grapes, starting avocadoes, etc...misc. gardens... I hope I don't need much of it but a couple Benjamin's here and there plus a modest-closet-size bit of indoor space, grub and basics stockpile I can eat eventually anyway. S hooting at 6 months self sufficiency. IMPOSSIBLE to be fully self sufficient long term, you're gonna need a new steel shovel and computer, lol)))

I doubt you could even comprehend engineering and you sure couldn't last an hr in my contracting biz, but that's fine, I don't need to "be able" (betting I could do yours a hell of a lot easier than you mine) and you don't need to do mine. Specialization is not new. Good for you Patty Cakes.

  22.  @mhero9255  Despite two of my siblings being professors and living in a college town myself--I hope for a big shift with the 'going online' thing courtesy of Covid, plus the insane tuition inflation. No doubt labs, regular classes and "the college experience" can not be entirely replaced (I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything) still most learning can be done online today without any instructors required. I'd cheer if enrollment was cut in half, it's the reality check universities desperately need. Degrees are cheapened with 'everyone has one' right when they are most ridiculously expensive. And right when "your plumber will drive a Porsche" as the trades become some of the most lucrative jobs available. I wonder who will fill the trade jobs in this coming infrastructure build, seems we need to import a couple million more Mexicans as established citizens are TOO GOOD to do manual work.

Hopefully you figure out soon enough (before it's too late for a decent retirement) that things were never ideal and yet SOME folks always thrive and others always wallow in self pity and excuses for personal failure. You have to keep on investing one in yourself and in the economy or your guaranteed to fail.

I've been beating that drum for many yrs and when mentioning it to young ppl their eyes glaze over, even 'guaranteed' 6 figure incomes within a few yrs doesn't mean anything to them bc for decades in America we have stigmatized the trades, negative status no matter how smart and successful you may be at it. Plus it entails REAL WORK which most youth have no tolerance for nor any experience.

"Who John, who is being corrupted!" another senator exclaimed. "All of us." replied McCain. The best candidate would be someone with zero political ambitions, someone who has an agenda to achieve certain goals, reforms, etc., but doesn't want the job, only willing to do it out of duty or desperation to get certain things done then return to respectable private life.

I used to employ others but now content to only employ myself as it dramatically reduces my risk, stress, work load and obligations to others. I could earn double or triple via employing several but it would make my hair fall out in my hazardous biz and the state punishes me for being an employer....so screw it. 6 figure income plus investments appreciation is good enough and you wouldn't want me to be greedy by helping others THAT much would you? Do you have high skill in one of the trades in demand? That plus integrity, work ethics, monetary self discipline, and so on, is all it takes to bank $100k plus.

I believe the way to do that is start teaching financial literacy, promote monetary discipline and get the general public INVESTED in stocks, local businesses and so on. Everyone needs a direct undeniable stake.

Many have been highly irresponsible with mortgages too, my taxes went to mid age folks who were living hand to mouth and couldn't pay their bills when something went wrong (Covid) meanwhile my shack was long paid off and zero debt otherwise I had to support reckless individuals who don't have a grand in the bank but live in much nicer places.

  37. How much do you need? My BMW ICE only has about 300 miles which means 250 practically as you want some margin. Charging time is maybe more important, for many an extra 250 miles takes some 30 minutes, if your driving 600 miles/day that means 2 modest length breaks you probably want anyway. That time will approach 15 minutes in the near future.

  42. Normal is living hand to mouth which is an extremely expensive life style, instead of living well BELOW one's means and getting ahead. Don't be normal. (yes a tangent, just say'n!) I'd be inclined to wait until the 'bubble pops' but in fact I bought my shack right about the last peak and I'm glad I did, it's not so much an investment as a place to live where no one can tell you what to do with your own dirt.

Couple trivial technical issues with Louis comments: Lithium is a relatively tiny component of Li batts, it's just that it's in all chemistries of the type, it's not hundreds of pounds but more like 10lbs. 2nd--there are no Rare Earths in these batteries....totally besides the point, just say'n. I appreciate this sort of thing being brought to our attention, as a Tesla fan they need to do a lot better with servicing quality, consistency and communication. That won't happen without awareness of the problems.

  45. You'll probably change your mind if you care about costs and other practicle aspects. Hard to justify paying 4X more per mile with ICE. I'm in no hurry either but buying a new ICE car seems insane, current BMWs will be my last ICE cars. Also you will need to avoid any new car as ICE too will have similar issues.

  47. You haven't even experienced significant inflation, it was up to 15 or 18% (if memory serves) in the early 1980's. Things are far better today overall, but YEAH the reckless printing by DC is going to cost us.

The only thing that's certain is failure if you don't invest intelligently in something , no matter what era you are trapped in. I've seen much worse times, but yes the reckless printing will cost us and 'crashes' will happen. The only reason ppl got hurt during 2008/9 crash was undisciplined emotional reactions to the market and stupid mortgages they couldn't afford. Had they simply rode it out they'd done very well by now.

I ask because I also overreacted in my late teens, as so many of us do. Lucky for me I thought the end of free enterprise was near so I rushed to start my own contracting biz at 20 right in the middle of the worst recession I've ever experienced and double digit inflation. It was tough sledding for a few yrs but I never regretted it, stuck it out and eventually thrived. But everything was much harder back then including NO INTERNET, frequent trips to the library were required but not remotely as effective or efficient as today's options.
