@williamhamstra9673 Overall gasoline would cost considerably less without ethanol but not necessarily at the pump. We are paying for this asinine policy in other ways. What you seem to miss is that there is as much fossil energy input to grow the corn, fertilizer, diesel tractors, and so on, as you get from the ethanol. So it's like using a gallon of ethanol to produce a gallon of ethanol and the process is far from free. See how that can't make sense?

This is the norm with government making specific industrial choices that the market should figure out. It's one thing to demand 10% ethanol it's entirely another thing to require grain as the feedstock, utterly retarded, the sort of thing that makes a nation poor.

@zebman9228 There is no such thing as unregulated capitalism. It's not for YOU to decide what's a good individual choice for others. It is for us all to protect the environment and that's one thing free markets cannot properly account for, externalities. Is ultra processed food that many live on good? Nope, it kills millions every yr and degrades everyone who consumes it. Why don't you advocate banning burgers, fries, most grain oils, SUGAR, etc. The damage that crap does makes covid trivial. Or do we believe in personal Liberty, one's own risk for their own 'gain' even if the gain isn't widely appreciated? I only recently learned that half the population is fine with an authoritarian dictatorship-- the unscientific unreasonable extremely destructive Covid response which clearly did vastly more damage than the disease. Scary and disgusting realization I live around those who rather be told how to live their own lives than take self responsibility.
