  1. Back in the around the 1960's rivers in the USA would sometimes catch on fire due to industrial waste, Los Angeles had a permanent brown dome overhead, it stunk and burned your eyes. The people (particularly the youth) protested and the clean water act, EPA and other environmental initiatives were created and things have improved dramatically since.
