Many tree species including our beloved redwoods, Giant Sequoias, cannot exist without fire Devastating fires happen only after decades of the absence of cleansing fires, annually or every few yrs. 4th gen rancher in my area of farther N. California: "Smokey Bear was the cruelest joke ever played on the West."

  3. NO problems? Ice sheets periodically bulldozed over half N. America and W. Euro, not just deforesting but scraping all the soil away to bare rock, massive ice melt lake release floods wiped out endless more South of the ice sheets. Climate swings up to 15 deg. C in a matter of decades, only 12k yrs ago, wrought havoc and megafauna extinctions. Big impacts from space cause Tsunamis a kilometer high around entire ocean basins leveling lowlands everywhere.....

  4.  @susanfarley1332  Where you are wrong is to except humanity, we are just another animal species with a large impact both good and bad. Beavers, hippos, bison, caribou, whales, everything alters the landscape. Yes WE have to be much more deliberate and conscientious about it with our tech powers, but we will probably stop the next cosmic impactor which is hard to say is anything but a good result. From a Ghia Hypothesis perspective, humans may be here to protect the planet, to do vastly more good than harm. It's not popular belief but CO2 has become dangerously low in recent millions of yrs, near levels where mass plant extinctions would happen during glacial maximums. Plants can't exist much below 150ppm and 180 has happened geologically very recently. That is extremely dangerous territory for ALL life on Earth. CO2 is as essential as water. NO question plant life is benefiting from higher CO2 and more drought tolerant. That doesn't mean we want 1000ppm say, but I think 500 is better than 280 where we started. The rate of change may be alarming but the magnitude so far is not, life thrived at 10,000ppm. In a modern house you probably have some 2000 often. Meanwhile the obsolescence of fossil fuels is in sight, vast majority of remaining reserves will be left in the ground.
