RS Man You seem to have a missunderstanding of what 'stall' means to an airplane--It has nothing to do with engine performance--It's all about the WING.  When a wing reaches a certain 'angle of attack' (that's the angle measured in the direction of air flow/aircraft direction--the angle between the wing and the air flow)  At some point the air is no longer flowing over the top of the wing in a way that the wing can generate efficient lift, the air 'separates' off the top of wing--goes turbulent and the lift suddenly dramatically decreases AND the drag suddenly dramatically INCREASES.  There is only one way to recover (assuming you don't have tons of excess thrust available like some fighter planes might) and that is to drop the nose (as 'all' planes will do by design automatically and as the wing stalls) and regain airspeed and recover at a lower altitude.  This 747 was beginning to recover (it appears) just before impact--it just needed another maybe 1000ft of altitude that it didn't have.  This is why stalls are very dangerous at low alt.

  24. Bill J Not just the taxes you are talking about but if he follows through on his subsidies for specific inefficient industries (tariffs) the entire global economy will suffer. The first folks in America whom will be out of a job will be the uneducated, unskilled whom formed the core of Trump's base. It was high tariffs that caused the Great Depression to be as long and deep as it was, hopefully someone schools DT about some of these things he is so clueless about. But then one would have to assume he gives a shit about America beyond the personal enrichment that he has already shamelessly begun as prez elect. And NOTHING is going to "bring the jobs back" because those lousy jobs are being done by machines. It has been clear for decades that to succeed in the modern economy one need get an education and/or upgrade their skills. The biggest losers in America ignored such advice and are ignorant enough to blame immigration, economic freedom and minorities for their own damn failure. Meanwhile a high skilled welder, diesel mechanic, etc., with integrity, self motivated, hard working and smart are all but impossible to find....and those are occupations that are NOT about to be robotized but they are out of reach of Trump's sniveling losers....they are just too demanding and difficult for most 'men'.

  42. Climate is important but it's not the primary factor in this event. It's mainly about excess fuel load allowed to build up for decades. These lands were "meant" to burn frequently with low intensity in a fashion that is healthy for the forests. This would have been almost as bad in a 1910 climate. Also it's not necessary or prudent that most structures 'can burn down from a single ember on the roof'. This was entirely preventable, the ignition source and climate are largely a sideshow. Prior to modern times fire was frequent and benign. The entire system is adapted to fire, we interfered with that crucial component and pay the price. Some native trees can't even drop their seeds until after fire burns under them, large healthy trees come out unscathed if the fire is annual or every several yr.s such that it travels low and slow.

  43.  @gonefishing3644  "Lush watered" landscaping wasn't the problem for Paradise, that sort of thing doesn't tend to be flammable anyway, but it has been called a 'tinderbox' by locals for decades, a bad fire was essentially inevitable. There were many places mixed with uncleared natural fuel, brush, etc., and structures need to be fire resistant particularly in such settings, most were not.

RS Man Clarification:  Engine failure can LEAD to a stall of the wing just as anything that slows the plane down can but that's not what happend to this 747 apparently...it simply had the nose way to high...climbing steeper then it could maintain proper air speed/flow over the wing.  It is likely that the cargo broke free and rolled aft making it impossible to lift the tail up and maintain a sustainable climb rate. (or the cargo center of gravity was grossly missplaced to begin with perhaps) So as it slowed down the pilot wants to give down elevator to reduce climb rate and keep adequate airspeed but the weight was too far back--nothing is much more dangerous then an excessively tail heavy aircraft.  Or it's possible that the pilot just screwed up really severly and ignored stall warnings and deliberately held the nose much too high, but that seems highly unlikely as it's a unbelievably stupid mistake with consistently deadly consequences this close to the turf.

RS Man One more thing:  It does happen rarely that ONE engine of four will fail, for more then that to fail at the same time is exceedingly rare unless flying thru volcanic ash or hitting a hundred geese, or running out of fuel or something like that, and even if a 747 loses any 2 engines on take off (the worst possible time) it can safely climb out gradually and go around to land.  It might have a chance even on one engine alone depending on circumstances.
