And the societal stigmatization of ALL trades, especially if they get your hands dirty. Mention to a young person all the 6 figure opportunities in the trades (there's plenty) and their eyes glaze over, they've been indoctrinated to believe any job including manual work is beneath them, only for losers or whatever. It's mindless. Some of the smartest most disciplined workers I know are freelance diesel mechanics, much smarter than many engineers I've known.

With your own shop you can charge $150/hr and be overwhelmed with business, assuming high quality and integrity. The biggest problem you'll have is hiring a few good mechanics to work for you but as a one man operation you can still thrive. (I do so in the field welding biz, not quite to $150 yet but can command that except I won't for old loyal customers)

@LynxStarAuto Yeah but one can get much more rewarding, challenging creative work in the field. I have mech engineering background/degree but never officially worked in that capacity. However it's been crucial in some aspects of my own biz.

@KR It's never easy and you have to be all in on it. Started my own tiny contracting biz at 20 not even knowing if there was an adequate market for it. Drove worthless econoboxes, had no TV, no toys no sterio, all my savings, time and energy went into it. Eventually it paid off, in a sense it pays off almost immeadiately from the experience, confidence built of taking on more than you know how to finish but figure it out as you go and get it done reasonably right, learn a ton. Under bid things and bust your ass long hours for free but still deliver a quality product, and so on.

@antieatingactivist I too was indoctrinated that way, mainly by my father but also by society. My brothers and I all dropped out to do other interesting things anyway. (eventually returned and finished for our own reasons) You are responsible for your choices regardless of societal infulences, religion, public school brain washing or whatever. Thinking for one's self was never optional. "Tasked" with keeping vehicles on the road?? WTH?

@nGUNNARp If that happens in America it's on the idividual. NO excuse for that, I know 'apprenticies' (Noobs without much experience) making 5X that.
