At this time Japanese battleships had no countable air-support, so they were always afraid of the US airforce. This is not the mood going into a major sea-battle. Additionally the Japanese battleships Fuso and Yamashiro were led in a stubborn way by their commanders. Again the enforcement of a night-action made this useless defeat of the Japanese possible.
