I think Drach is wrong with his interpretation of German naval-high-command-orders. Even armed with 18-inch-guns German BBs would not had been allowed to battle with enemy-BBs. Adm. Marschall left his command about different opinions in this question. Captain Hoffmann, commander of Scharnhorst closed (during Operation Berlin) in to HMS Ramillies in a distance of 23.000 yards to lure Ramillies away from convoy HX 106, to give Gneisenau the opportunity to engage the convoy. But the coward Lütjens ordered Hoffmann back into line. When the Germans started (not really lasting) to convert Gneisenau in a Renown-like armament of 6 15-inch-guns, several officers protested. I think they were right. Most of British BBs were from WWI. In WWI the Germans were able to sink British ships with 11 or 12 inch-guns. And Scharnhorst-class-BBs could fire 3,5 rounds a minute., no British-, Italian , French -, US or Japanese BB could do this. World record is hold by Seydlitz after the stern-turrets blew up at the Doggerbank. With the remaining turrets Seydlitz fired 123 11-inch-shells in 6 rounds a minute against Beatty's squadron, a very British habit.

@KatyushaLauncher The guns had improved, too. Scharnhorst-class-11inch-guns were high velocity guns and Scharnhorst achieved the most far hit against a moving target (24.000 yards). So penetration was never the problem, to hit is the major aspect. It is no problem to debate this theme with you, but, please, you should argue with arguments not with statements.

@KatyushaLauncher you are , too, one of those on-paper-seamen as those as you quoted. There is no evidence for your statements, because Scharnhorst-class-ships avoided battles. On KBismarck.com Bill Jurens admitted, that high-velocity-11-inch-shells could penetrate BBs like bigger calibers. On the film Comradeship Gneisenau (Kameradschaft Gneisenau) a crewmember narrated the lucky hits on Glorious. "At the beginning of the battle, we shot in reality behind the horizon."

@KatyushaLauncher yes, of course, Sir. All decisive hits were lucky hits in BB-History. That Lindemann wanted to dodge a small Swordfish-torp, instead to take it, and the torp hit the rudder, was simple luck. If this would not had happened, Bismarck would had shot Rodney and KGV to pieces. About caliber is to say, that, of course a bigger caliber might have more effect. But it is necessary? When DoY made the fatal hit with a 14-inch-shell into Scharnhorst's propulsion-room, it was simply luck. And it did not matter, it was a 11 or a 18-inch shell. The point is, to hit slightly above the main belt. And the probalility to hit, is increased with the number of rounds fired. And Scharnhorst-class-bbs could fire 3,5 rounds a minute. Yamato-class or Nelson-class ships max. 1 round a minute.

@KatyushaLauncher No Sir, you are wrong as the usual on-paper-seamen and on-paper-warriors. Of course an intact Bismarck would have defeated Rodney and KGV, because Bismarck defeated the mighty Hood and PoW at Denmark Strait. This was the historical reality and is it till today.

@KatyushaLauncher No, Sir, PoW was brand-new and a well constructed ship, except the turrets at this point of time. The Brits did not hesitated to throw PoW into battle. The Germans did in case of Tirpitz, because Tirpitz had only 2 months of trial instead of the usual 6 months. But captain Topp of Tirpitz insisted to participate in Rheinübung. It was denied. As i already wrote, at Denmark Strait the Brits had all advantages on their side. 10 British big guns against German 8. A better angle to avoid hits. The Germans had never any options to alter course, with 2 heavy cruisers in their back and in lee the ice. It was again a failed strategic decision of the German boneheaded admiralty to keep Tirpitz in the port. Both ships would have wiped out the Atlantic from British BBs. PS: Bismarck's & Tirpitz' turrets were misconstructed concerning the shape of the turrets. Hood's turret-design was much better.
