The war was lost for the Japanese already in Pearl Harbour.... without to attack all miltary ports on the US mainland there was no chance for negotiations at any point during the war.

@Ron52G Gordon Duff of Veterans Today advocates another opinion. The number of ports spreaded on the US West Coast, is easy to grasp. To bottle up the Panama Canal, two older battle-ships are enough. An invasion of the US western territories is much cheaper than to manage the occupation of thousends of islands in the Pacific. The fact is that the US performance of Ten-Go was a miserable one, very ineffective, if we compare the sinking of Repulse and the Prince of Wales. If we compare both vids of Drach the estimations are not really sticked to the facts and fair.

@Ron52G a long time before the war was lost for Japan. In sea-battles with carrier-forces sailing, it is useless to send out battle-ships to the open sea without air-coverage. The Japanese were driven by 2 aspects, 1. to keep face till the end and second a possible political change in the US. About my strategic aspect at the beginning in 41 you should care about the US abilities. If someone attacks the US mainland, he enforces the melee, the place of battle, the advantage of attacking. The US had only 4 aircraft-carriers in the Pacific, they would have been lost, without any battle.

@Ron52G You did not mention the facts. Repulse was old-fashioned, that's true. PoWs AA-system was superiour to Yamatos and as you can see on the pictures, PoW was much faster, even to Yamato, to outmaneuvre bomb or torpedo hits. It was nearly the same desaster like Bismarck's, a hit in the propulsion. The major aspect of failure was to send BBs out without air-coverage, anyway you are hit by a swordfish or a mitsubishi. The US never exposed their precious Iowa-class BBs, only their old ones in overwhelming numbers against the tactical misleaded Japanese commanders at the battle of Surigao Strait. Similarily we see here already the sinking of Musashi by air-raids. Fighting during the night against radar-steered artillery is useless, as it happened already in the battle at the North-Cape in 1943. At daylight the Germans would have had some chances with their optical superiority, but during the night as the Japanese, useless like fishing trawlers. Still in our days warships are very vulnerable to plane attacks.

@Ron52G yes, of course, i know, a major problem in the area of the Chinese Sea and Oceania. But Bismarck's failure had already happened due to a relatively small torpedo (of 1,670lb) hit. Adm. Philips decided not demand a Brewster escort. And the AA-fire of the 2 Bigships and 4 destroyers damaged Bombers and shot down some. The advantage of Swordfish was, that AA-fire went through them without to explode, real Bombers were better targets for AA-fire. And the number of Japanese Bombers sinking PoW and Repulse were not a 10th of the Bombers sinking Yamato.
