  1.  @ingvarhallstrom2306  bottom line there is no such thing as mass, only combinations of potential and kinetic energy with respect to the fundamental forces of nature. even energy itself is not a physical thing, it's a mathematical model for describing how nature works.

  7.  @cykkm  energy and mass are concepts that help us describe reality. as such they are physical. we can measure and interact with them. my point is that they're not physical "things". if you look below the surface, mass boils down to forms of energy, and energy doesn't seem to be a substance, just a model - a very useful and successful one - for the way things work.

  9. Thanks for covering this. It's a terrible situation, and a foretaste of worse to come over the century and beyond. I don't live too close to the fires, but the smoke has been a health hazard. Acquaintances living in other areas have had to evacuate, and a close relative who is too sick to work and relies on rental income from a holiday unit in an evacuated area has lost thousands of dollars. Many though have suffered far worse, with properties, livelihoods and even lives lost.

  15. I'm not convinced. Even if light could reach us at every point, wouldn't the inverse square law make it so dim to be humanly imperceptible past a certain distance? Thus human perception threshold would also place a limit on what stars' light is visible.

One of my videos incorporated an excerpt of a soundtrack that was released on a license similar to creative commons but it was blocked in most countries and I had to upload a new version without that excerpt. And for another video I used a soundtrack that was explicitly labelled as creative commons but it was still blocked in the originating country.

  29. talking about parallax made me think ... what if we put a telescope in orbit around jupiter and measure parallax from there. it would be a long-term experiment 6 years (half of jupiter's year) plus the time it takes to build it and get it there. at 5 times earth's diameter, it means more accurate measurement of more stars, and maybe we can use the data to refine other distance methods.

  31. according to wikipedia, the error bars put the star's minimum possible age at 13.66 which is compatible with the age of the universe as understood.
