  3. a long time ago there was something floating around the internet about all sorts of funny fake etymologies of sayings. like "don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" dated from an era when making hot water was laborious and time consuming, so the whole had to take turns in their pecking order in the same bathtub with a month's worth of grime. by the time the baby was washed, the water was so murky, it would be easy to accidentally throw the baby out with the bathwater.

  4. There's a dialogue recounted in John's gospel where some Jews attempted to stone Jesus because something he said led them to think that he was claiming to be God. That supports the idea that Jesus believed he was God, but it also presents a legitimate reason why he never said it explicitly. Mark's gospel recounts Jesus early on claiming to forgive sins, presented in the story as something only God can do, and Jesus calling himself the Lord of the Sabbath, as if he had authority over a commandment seen as divinely imposed. My first ever sermon was on this passage. I always wondered whether Jesus understood that he was God, and what struck me preparing the talk was that it seemed that Jesus really did have that understanding but wasn't explicit about it so that he wouldn't alienate people.

Look at how the new testament quotes sometimes from hebrew and sometimes from greek old testament, which are not identical. The very writers of the Bible themselves were not so obsessed with minor differences that have little substantial consequence. I think we can learn from them.

  11.  @timorean320  Also not every king was from David and Ephraimite Samuel acted as priest. Things don't follow unbreakable rules. Melchizedek was a king but not a Davidic king and a priest but not an Aaronite priest. But yeah it's a weird story that appears to have been grafted into the text.

  14.  @goldskelly  People are not stupid. It's a fair question. Where does the Bible explicitly say that Jesus believed he was God? As Simon explains, Jesus' self-understanding had to be communicated indirectly because otherwise it would have been rejected. This also means that people might not interpret his statements the same way. Hence a question arises and needs to be asked.

  15.  @davidh.4944  lol my aim was to give the general idea, not to teach japanese, when most people here can't read japanese. but yes there was a mistake, to get distracted is "your ki scatters" ki ga chiru. "pulls your ki" ki o hiku actually means to draw someone's attention (which can have the effect of distracting someone but not necessarily). "your ki goes ahead" ki ga susumu more accurately means to feel inclined to do something, feel like doing something. "enters your ki" ki ni iru is a bit stronger than appeal to you, it means you really like it, it's part of how you think and feel now since it's entered your ki. hey yeah i forgot about being in your "original ki" genki = in good spirits, well, and "sick ki" byouki = unwell, ill. these are very common words.

  20.  @davidh.4944  interesting about ki ni naru. it's not just entered your ki, it comprises your ki. yes i think it more often than not has negative connotations, your mind keeps dwelling on something like a worry. but it can also mean it's aroused your curiosity (like in the anime Hyouka, Chitanda keeps saying it that way) or even caught your interest.

  26. Good question. The New Testament writers distinguished the two Jacobs. Hebrew Jacob is transliterated into Greek as Iakwb and remains uninflected (I'm using w for an omega). Jews called Jacob have their names not transliterated but hellenized as Iakwbos and is inflected like any Greek noun. Since most people know Jacob from the Old Testament, his name is written the same way in the New Testament to avoid confusion. The hellenized form of the name is rendered James because that's what the name Jacob has evolved into in modern English. I haven't looked into Judah vs Judas but my guess is that it's the same deal. The Judas who wrote the letter is shortened to Jude. I don't know why, but maybe it's to avoid confusion or association with Judas Iscariot.

  27. i found out about them about 20 years ago when i preached a sermon on the samaritan woman in john's gospel. i've always wondered how many survived to this day. it's interesting that a christian bible dictionary said that they have a "corrupted" pentateuch, i guess because they regard the masoretic text as authoritative.

  29. in modern greek yes, but maybe not in ancient times. there must have been a reason why they wrote it as "ai". i wonder if anyone knows how it was pronounced. also i'd say it's more like "e" in egg. the first "e" in "elephant" is faster and more open, the second "e" is indeterminate and sounds nothing like an "e".

BTW if "this god" is an alleged all-powerful creator, then I think some humility is called for. God is not obliged to follow your demands, whether to speak to you directly or anything else. Personally, I would trust a written record more than something that could be a passing trick of my imagination. Frankly, if you claimed you heard some voice, I would start to suspect your state of mind ...

  47. i don't see how the gate theory changes the meaning. just like the rope theory, it softens it - like a camel would have to unload its cargo, a rich man would have to unload his wealth. perhaps western ears might perceive a difference that i don't see. in my culture, ridiculous exaggerations (aka hyperbole) is common. when you hear Jesus say something ridiculously extreme, you know he doesn't mean it literally. the point that's exaggerated highlights the specific point he's emphasizing.

"The infinitive would be Ioudas." Ioudas is a noun. It does not have an infinitive. It can be inflected in some contexts so that it reads "Iouda" in which case you can't distinguish. But Judah is rendered Ioudas (nom) and Ioudan (acc) In Mat 1.2-3, hellenized just like Judas in Jude 1 and John 14.22. Looks like unlike Jacob, Judah's name was hellenized. Luke 3.26 has "Iouda" but it's genitive so I can't tell. Rev 5.4, 7.5 has "Iouda" and I'm not sure of the case, but I think it's genitive. Are there any other references to OT Judah in the NT?

  67. in Hebrew thought a soul is a living being. God breathed life into Adam and he became a soul. A soul departing means stop breathing and your life ends. in the new testament, "soul" is often used for when we say "person". So maybe a "spiritual part within your soul" might mean "a spiritual aspect about you". Catholics absorbed the Greek idea of a soul being the essential non-material part of a person, a spirit distinct from the physical body. This was probably foreign to non-Hellenistic Jews. So it might not make sense interpreting a Hebrew text that way. just my best guess ...
