Here’s the depression -> My mother was moved from a full time sales job at Sears to a part time, 2 days a week job there and a part time 2 days a week job at Western Electric Telegraph. Her brother signed on as a deck hand on a South American tramp steamer because he got food & a place to sleep. She walked to work and put newspaper in to cover the holes in her shoes. They lived one week on a (boosted) sack of cabbage, to feed three. This had been a middle class family, before the depression.
