I had my first government job, in the 1970’s, because the agency needed women in the all-male job. I found that hilarious; the duties were comparable to being an Avon lady — walk, talk, write down accurate info. My second government job, in the 1980’s, was to be a token White in an agency that investigated complaints of Employment Discrimination. I knew I was capable, and my skills were not due to my skin color. I worked there, with regular promotions, for 24 years. It was my confidence that allowed me to walk into both jobs — if the government wanted to play “fill out quotas,” I would make the most of it. There were “quotas” for veterans and for those with disabilities as well. I believe people should be chosen based on skills, but those in charge often have the mind set that only CERTAIN ethnic or physical traits are appropriate for certain jobs
