  1. The final nail in the coffin that ended the patience of the Germanic peoples was the imposition of the Roman legal system. The Germanic tribes settled disputes at a regular assembly (Thing). There were no judges like in Roman law. Voting took place like in a jury court. In general, all free men in a certain area were obliged to attend the assembly. The Romans wanted to prohibit this and replace it with Roman courts, and Varus in particular pushed for this.
