  1. Eltz Castle was attacked in the Middle Ages and was under siege for years (1331–1336). The attackers even built their own fortification opposite. However, they still failed to conquer the castle. After two years of siege, the lords of the castle, previously free Eltz knights, came to an agreement with the attacker (prince elector Baldwin of Luxembourg) and accepted him as feudal lord. The Knights of Eltz were free knights and only subordinate to the emperor. When there were disputes about the succession to the imperial throne, Baldwin of Luxembourg took the opportunity to make the knights his subject. Normally no prince dared to attack free imperial knights since they were only subordinate to the emperor, but because of the inheritance dispute the emperor could not protect his knights.
