950 RPM? As far is i know, there have been two versions of the MG42 one for stationary use with 1.500 RPM (equiped with 10.000 rounds) and a mobil field version slowered down to 1.200 RPM, were the MG assistent had 4 ammo boxes to carry. The handle was designed so that you could carry two with one hand.

TaZ101SAGA The Mauser Modell Karabiner 98 was developed by Mauser in 1889 and there fore the name. The standart barrel lenght was 1110 mm with a drilled barrel for 7,9-mm ammo. The K98k had a barrel lehngt of exact 600 mm wich is nearly the half of the original Mauser Karabine 1998 aka K98. But the barrel drill was not realy changed by 6,17° to ca. 5° at the short version. During WW1 & 2 the K98 was produced via different factories wich you can identify with the stamp on the barrel. Original WW2 rifles have allways the code RZM stamped in. RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) every K98/k without a RZM stamp is a pre WW2 reproduktion for export - e.g. Argetinia or Israel but the most of them stil hav ethe NATO size barrel and lock. As a former German Army officer i also have read many books about WW2 taktics and generaly miliatary formations. A heavy MG unit (MG42 + loader + asisstent (nicknamed as Sherpa)) was a heavy MG unit during WW2. Instead of reading Facebook articles, i prefer reading books like "Achtung Panzer" from Heinz Guderian.

TaZ101SAGA The was no Spotter the job of the 2.nd ibn the team was to supply the ammo directly and switch the barrel. He was not equiped with a expensive Zeiss binoculars, because the MG42 was intended to be used on shorter distances. With the long barrel the MG42 could also used on longer ragengs, but above the first 100 rounds in a row the barrel became inaccuarte above 200 meters, because of the heat.At that point a K98 sharpshooter made the better job. BTW. dont confound the K98 with the K98k as the k version was the standart rifle at the beginning of WW2. The K98 was shortened and named than as K98k (k for kurz (short). The sniper in WW2 used the longer barrel version of a K98 with a high precision Zeiss scope.

The regular MG42 had a rate of fire of 1.200 limited from ca, 1.500 RPM. I have never heard of any regularly one lowered to 950 RPM, even the successor the German MG 3 in use by the German Army has a RPM of 1.2000 RPM. (And was terribly feared by the Taliban in Afghanistan) In WW2, the stationary MG42 on a fixed tripod with a ammo supply via boxes had a RPM of 1.500. This 1500 RPM version was handled by two men - the shooter changes the barrel and the and loader attaches the new ammo strip box.

Zachary Fisher The MG42 had a long rifled barrel and could be fired with a high precision. Most other MG had a tactical range of ca. 40-60 yards. the MG 42 could fire in singe fire mode with precision on 200 yards.

The MG42 or MG3 is still in use by the German army and killed a lot of Talibans in Afghanistan. The newer MG3 has a better alloy and the barrel last´s longer. watch?v=YyO-SCiqfx0 The MG3 is is there fired with salves.

CoriolanusAtrox Diring WW2 MG42 units consits of 3 Men. The operator, the loader and barrel switcher and the poor guy who had to carry the ammo together with the loader. Their job in field operations was to give massive surpressive fire from the flanks so that the infantry could attack in the center with much casulties.

TaZ101SAGA Thre was a Sharpshooter and a Sniper rifle version. The Sharpshooter was usually the best shooter of the battalion with a K98k, but the Sniper had a special Sniper educataion and used a K98 instead of a K98k. Even the Brits had the idea to drop down parachuters in Bavaria to kill Adolf with Snipers using a long K98. During the battle of Stalingrad, the Wehrmacht used many Sniper with K98´s and the longer barrel and the new Zeiss scope. The most of theam have been produced in a factory in the town of Solingen (Carl Eickhorn) and are actually traded in a good condition above 5.000€

TaZ101SAGA I still have one of these K98 with a long barrel and use it still for hunting on boers, bcs the large caliber gives me the security, that the hitted boer is done. Usualy i use a Blaser, but for boar hunt i prefer the old K98 with it spunch or a Blaser R8. watch?v=FIBEwY4_Yqc watch?v=fmc7HgrZsxAwatch?v=sVs8R8M8knY

The first MG42 had a fire rate of 1500 RPM wich was than reduced for the mobile infantry version to 1200 RPM. The stationary MG42 still kept the high fire rate as a MG nest was equiped with min 10.000 rounds. On vehicles and tanks the MG-34 was used as there was a water cooling system for the MG34 and the MG 42 was just air cooled / switch barrel. Some guys from the Africa Corps reported that they had drunken the water from the MG cooling and replaced it with pee as they have been short on water in the desert.
