  1. They thought the same thing as Germany with Russia. Wandel durch Handel. Change through trade. Deeper ties lower the chances of war. But Taiwan and Germany forgot that that works only between democracies, and not with dictatorships.

Brings back memories of the 70s, and reminds me of a song in my country: "Side by side, they are helping each other The government and the capital is sitting in the same boat. But it is not they who row so the sweat is pouring, and the whips don't tickle their fat necks either." Fits like a glove today, just as it did 50 years ago.
